Abruzzese bruschetta at the foot of the Gran Sasso in the small village of Tozzanella
The Tozzanella Bruschetta Festival is one of the longest-running and most cherished summer events in the Teramo hills. It takes place in Tozzanella, a tiny hamlet in the Municipality of Tossicia, in the province of Teramo—a village of about fifty inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 557 meters, just a few kilometers from the municipal seat and bordering the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. In this authentic corner of Abruzzo, between green hills and views opening onto the peaks of the Gran Sasso, the local community renews a celebration every year that combines fine dining, folk tradition, and devotion.
The festival was born in 1978, linked from the outset to the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, and has since become a fixture of the Tozzanella summer calendar, curated with passion by the Tozzanella Pro Loco. Sunday retains its religious heart, with mass and a procession in honor of the Saint, testifying to how the gastronomic festival and the village's devotional tradition continue to coexist.
The undisputed queen is, of course, the bruschetta, simple yet prepared with quality ingredients: crispy toasted bread seasoned in many variations that tell the story of the territory.
Alongside the bruschetta, there is no shortage of other dishes from the Abruzzese peasant cuisine and local drinks, from wine to beer, served at the food stands that open in the evening hours.
Beyond gastronomy, the festival offers live music and entertainment: historical editions have featured folk music groups, brass bands, and performances. The festival has always been accompanied by events such as the painting competition named after Camillo Piersanti, the briscola card tournament, entertainment for children, and the inevitable lottery draw. Shared outdoor tables make the event an opportunity for residents, returning emigrants, and visitors to meet in a simple, family-friendly atmosphere.
The Bruschetta Festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover Tozzanella and the Tossicia area, immersed in the nature of the Gran Sasso and the Laga mountains. Admission is free and participation is open to everyone: just arrive, sit at the tables, and let yourself be won over by the scents and flavors of the most genuine Abruzzo.
The 30th edition of the Tozzanella Bruschetta Festival will be held on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, 2026, in the eponymous hamlet of the Municipality of Tossicia, in the province of Teramo. An important milestone for an event born in 1978 and organized by the Tozzanella Pro Loco. As per tradition, food stands will open in the evening with bruschetta in many variations—oil, tomato, sausage, ventricina teramana, cheeses—accompanied by typical Abruzzese dishes and local drinks, amidst live music and festive moments. The complete program for the two evenings will be released by the organizers closer to the event.
