About Saint Leucio Feast

Every second Sunday of July, the small village of Pietracamela, perched over a thousand meters high on the slopes of the Gran Sasso in the province of Teramo, celebrates its patron saint, Saint Leucio the Bishop. The festival blends religious solemnity—including mass, a procession of the statue through paved alleys, and a brass band—with the simple, authentic atmosphere of the Abruzzo mountains. It is a deeply felt event for the entire community, made even more special following the 2024 reopening of the historic Church of San Leucio.

The Patronal Feast of Pietracamela

In the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, at an altitude of 1,005 meters on the slopes of the Corno Piccolo, the village of Pietracamela (Teramo province, Abruzzo) celebrates its patron saint, Saint Leucio the Bishop, every year. The festival traditionally falls on the second Sunday of July and is the most anticipated moment of the summer for a community of just a few hundred inhabitants, who gather in full force alongside those who have emigrated but return to the village for the occasion.

Faith, Tradition, and Community

The core of the celebration is religious: the solemn holy mass in honor of Saint Leucio and the procession of the patron saint's statue along the characteristic stone alleys of the historic center, among houses leaning against the rock, wooden barn-balconies, and breathtaking views of the Gran Sasso. According to tradition, the procession is accompanied by a brass band, which makes the parade through the village streets even more evocative.

The Church of San Leucio

The festival is deeply linked to the parish church of San Leucio, an imposing stone building with a three-portal facade, a gabled central body, and a square bell tower with a spire. The current structure dates back to 1776–1780, while the Baroque high altar dates to 1749 and houses the statue of the patron saint; the origins of the cult, however, are much older, evidenced by a 13th-century parchment that already mentions a church of Saint Leucio. After the 2009 earthquake, the church remained unusable for fifteen years: its reopening for worship on July 28, 2024, right on the occasion of the patronal feast, restored the village's most iconic place of worship and gave new impetus to the celebration.

One of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages

Pietracamela, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, is a place of stone, water, air, and snow—an experience of mountain silence and authenticity. Experiencing the feast of Saint Leucio means immersing yourself in the truest dimension of inland Abruzzo: popular devotion, the hospitality of small communities, and the rugged beauty of the Gran Sasso massif that serves as a backdrop to every moment of the day.

How to Participate

The festival is organized by the parish together with the Pietracamela Pro Loco and takes place mainly outdoors, between the church and the streets of the center. Participation is free and open to all. Visitors to the village can combine the festival with a walk to discover the paved alleys, the gafi (wooden balconies), and the trails that climb toward Prati di Tivo and the Gran Sasso.
