The mid-August patronal feast in the village of Padula, in the Monti della Laga mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Santa Maria Assunta Patronal Feast is the most anticipated summer event in Padula, a small village in the municipality of Cortino, in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo. Nestled at nearly a thousand meters above sea level, among the forests of the Monti della Laga and the springs of the Tordino stream, the village gathers around its patron saint during the heart of Ferragosto, when former residents and vacationers return to fill its stone houses and streets.
The heart of the festival is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a 15th-century building that has undergone several restorations and was designated as the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Monti della Laga following renovations in 1988. Inside, it houses a fine gilded and painted wooden Baroque altar and traces of 16th-century frescoes. On August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, the community gathers for Mass and a procession carrying the image of the Madonna through the village streets, a moment that gives the festival its most intimate and authentic character.
Alongside the religious rites, the Pro Loco Padula di Cortino enlivens the days with a program of village festivities: games for all ages, dancing and music in the square, and moments of conviviality featuring mountain cuisine specialties. As is tradition, the event concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the valley. Admission is free, and the festival maintains the authentic, family-friendly atmosphere typical of the villages in the Laga area.
Padula is located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, a region renowned for its chestnut groves, porcini mushrooms, and wild berries. The Assunta festival is part of a summer filled with local initiatives, ranging from hikes to the springs of the Tordino to historical re-enactments related to mountain life. Participating in the festival is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of inland Abruzzo, where popular traditions and the bond with the land remain vibrant and deeply felt.
The Santa Maria Assunta Patronal Feast returns to Padula di Cortino in the summer of 2026. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: the Assumption holiday falls on August 15th, and the festival will take place, as usual, during the mid-August period. For the final program, including times, the procession, and specific events, please refer to updates from the Pro Loco Padula di Cortino and the Municipality of Cortino.
