In the heart of the Teramo province, at the foot of the Gran Sasso massif, the town of Montorio al Vomano hosts one of its most cherished traditions every early September: the San Gabriele Festival. This is not your typical static patronal feast, but a vibrant, modern community event that brings Piazza Diamante to life with concerts, performances, and shared moments, all while keeping its roots firmly planted in the local devotion to Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, the patron saint of Abruzzo.

A Community-Driven and Sustainable Soul

The festival is brought to life by the San Gabriele Association, which officially attained Third Sector Entity (ETS) status in 2026. This group of volunteers manages every aspect of the organization: setup, the food court, entertainment, and cultural initiatives. A hallmark of the festival is its plastic-free policy; a focus on waste reduction that has made the event a model for sustainable gatherings in Abruzzo over the years. The festival is also part of the Gran Sasso Live calendar and is supported by the Municipality of Montorio al Vomano.

What to Experience in the Square

The program is designed for all ages, alternating between spiritual moments and pure entertainment:

• Live concerts and DJ sets to liven up the evenings in Piazza Diamante;
• Dialect theater and cultural initiatives that celebrate local identity;
• Sports activities, including the "Città di Montorio al Vomano" cycling tour;
• Kids' area with games and entertainment;
• Food court featuring pasta parties, dinners, and local specialties;
• Light shows, such as the illuminated fountain and the lighting of the traditional hearth, along with a raffle that draws hundreds of participants every year.

The Montopoly Svelt Project

The 2026 edition will be centered around the Montopoly Svelt project, an initiative to be unveiled during a special event in late August. It is yet another testament to how the San Gabriele Festival continues to innovate while staying true to its core mission: building community. Visitors arriving in Montorio al Vomano during these days will find the whole town celebrating, as the square becomes a communal living room where the Teramo province shows its most authentic and hospitable face.
