About Christmas in Milazzo

Every December, Milazzo—the pearl of the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Messina—transforms into a grand Christmas village. Amidst the historic center's streets and the ancient ramparts of the Castle, artisanal markets, concerts, nativity exhibitions, and the famous Living Nativity scene featuring over a hundred performers come to life. The program, promoted by the Municipality of Milazzo in partnership with local associations, enlivens squares and churches from the Immaculate Conception through to Epiphany, offering families and visitors a warm atmosphere filled with lights, folk traditions, and Sicilian flavors.

Christmas in the City of the Cape

With the arrival of Advent, Milazzo puts on its festive attire. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and dominated by its imposing Castle, this town in the province of Messina, Sicily, becomes the stage for over a month for a rich calendar of Christmas events promoted by the Municipality of Milazzo in collaboration with numerous local associations, the Pro Loco, and parish churches. Illuminations, decorated trees, and the scent of traditional sweets accompany residents and tourists through the old town and the central squares.

Markets, exhibitions, and concerts

The commercial and artisanal heart of the festival is the Christmas markets, which animate Piazza Marconi, Via Medici, Piazza Duomo, and the city center streets with stalls dedicated to crafts, decorations, and Christmas food and wine. Recurring highlights include:

  • The Earth Market (Mercato della Terra) Christmas edition, organized by the Slow Food Peloritani Tirrenici branch, featuring quality products and sustainable gift ideas on Sundays;
  • The artisanal market between Via Polidoro and Piazza delle Tartarughe, showcasing ceramics, jewelry, and ornaments;
  • Gospel and sacred music concerts in city churches, such as the Teatro Trifiletti and the Chiesa del Carmine;
  • Nativity and art exhibitions in the city's historic spaces, from the Chiesa di San Giacomo to the Carmine hall.

There are also plenty of activities for children, including Santa's Village and workshops dedicated to local traditions, such as the Cona di Natale, an ancient devotional rite of the Peloritani territory.

The Living Nativity at the Castle

The most anticipated event is undoubtedly the Living Nativity (Presepe Vivente) set up inside the fortified citadel of the Castle, curated by the Borgo Antico Theater Association. Within the medieval walls, over a hundred costumed performers bring the scenes of the Nativity to life—from the Annunciation to the Census of Quirinius, from Herod's court to the grotto—complete with acting, dancing, and singing. Along the path, ancient crafts are revived in wooden workshops, while fire shows, stilt walkers, and live music enrich the visit.

A Sicilian atmosphere

Christmas in Milazzo blends popular devotion, craftsmanship, and conviviality in a unique setting, suspended between the sea and the historic village. It is an opportunity to discover the traditions of the Messina area, savor festive sweets, and experience the authentic spirit of the holidays in one of the most evocative locations on the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast.
