Christmas markets, a living nativity scene, and festive events in the City of the Cape

With the arrival of Advent, Milazzo puts on its festive attire. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and dominated by its imposing Castle, this town in the province of Messina, Sicily, becomes the stage for over a month for a rich calendar of Christmas events promoted by the Municipality of Milazzo in collaboration with numerous local associations, the Pro Loco, and parish churches. Illuminations, decorated trees, and the scent of traditional sweets accompany residents and tourists through the old town and the central squares.
The commercial and artisanal heart of the festival is the Christmas markets, which animate Piazza Marconi, Via Medici, Piazza Duomo, and the city center streets with stalls dedicated to crafts, decorations, and Christmas food and wine. Recurring highlights include:
There are also plenty of activities for children, including Santa's Village and workshops dedicated to local traditions, such as the Cona di Natale, an ancient devotional rite of the Peloritani territory.
The most anticipated event is undoubtedly the Living Nativity (Presepe Vivente) set up inside the fortified citadel of the Castle, curated by the Borgo Antico Theater Association. Within the medieval walls, over a hundred costumed performers bring the scenes of the Nativity to life—from the Annunciation to the Census of Quirinius, from Herod's court to the grotto—complete with acting, dancing, and singing. Along the path, ancient crafts are revived in wooden workshops, while fire shows, stilt walkers, and live music enrich the visit.
Christmas in Milazzo blends popular devotion, craftsmanship, and conviviality in a unique setting, suspended between the sea and the historic village. It is an opportunity to discover the traditions of the Messina area, savor festive sweets, and experience the authentic spirit of the holidays in one of the most evocative locations on the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of Christmas in Milazzo is not yet available. Based on previous editions, a program spread across December and Epiphany is expected in the historic center and at the Castle, including Christmas markets, the Living Nativity curated by the Borgo Antico Association, nativity exhibitions, and concerts. Official dates will be communicated by the Municipality of Milazzo and local associations closer to the festivities. This page will be updated as soon as confirmed information becomes available.
By car: A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Milazzo exit, then follow signs for the center. By train: Milazzo station on the Messina-Palermo line, connected to the center by local buses. By plane: Catania-Fontanarossa or Reggio Calabria airports, approximately an hour and a half away.
Most events and markets have free admission. The Living Nativity at the Castle requires a 3-euro ticket, with free entry for children up to 12 years old.
