The most legendary five-a-side football tournament in South Tyrol, held in St. Pauls, Eppan
In the heart of St. Pauls, a picturesque wine village in Eppan an der Weinstraße (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol), the AFC St. Pauls sports field turns into the Morktplotz every July. This is the stage for the region's most spectacular, popular, and high-level five-a-side football tournament. The Mythos Morktplotz has become a permanent fixture on the South Tyrolean summer calendar, drawing fans and teams from across the province and even from abroad.
Matches are played on a small pitch (Kleinfeld) with four outfield players and a goalkeeper; squads can have a maximum of twelve athletes. The format includes several parallel competitions: the Open Tournament, open to dozens of teams competing in evening group stages before the finals; the Legends Tournament (Legendenturnier), reserved for veterans over 35, which has attracted international teams over the years; and, introduced in 2026, the Village Tournament (Dörferturnier), designed for teams from the various hamlets of Eppan.
The Morktplotz is about more than just football. On the Festplatz next to the pitch, the atmosphere of an authentic village festival thrives throughout the tournament: food stalls, local beer and wine, music, and entertainment accompany every evening. It is this blend of sport, conviviality, and tradition that makes the Mythos Morktplotz much more than a simple amateur tournament, earning it the nickname Kultturnier, or cult tournament.
Eppan is one of the most prominent wine-growing municipalities in South Tyrol, and its village of St. Pauls, with its iconic bell tower and surrounding vineyards, provides an ideal backdrop for this event. Visitors arriving for the tournament discover a village that combines a passion for football with the food and wine culture typical of the South Tyrolean Wine Road, all within a bilingual Italian-German setting.
The 2026 edition, the 34th in the tournament's history, kicked off on Saturday, July 4th, with a double novelty and a confirmation. Making its absolute debut was the village tournament: twelve teams from the hamlets of Eppan (St. Pauls alone fielded five) vied for the title, which was won by Girlano-Schreckbichl, who defeated Paulsner Feld 2-1 in the final, with a decisive goal by Nico Thalmann; third place went to Aich, victorious on penalties (4-3) over Luziafeld/Mariengorten.
On the same day, the Legends Tournament featured teams from outside the region, such as Alemannia Anspach from Hesse and the Lauf- und Saunafreunde from Salzburg: the Gauchos triumphed, overcoming the Profeti thanks to a brace by René Tagliapietra.
From Tuesday, July 7th to Friday, July 10th, the evening group stages of the Open Tournament were held, culminating in the finals on Saturday, July 11th. Throughout the week, the Festplatz hosted food, drinks, and entertainment.
Every evening, festivities on the Festplatz with food stalls, drinks, and music.
