About Volterra Mycological Exhibition

Every autumn, the Volterra Mycological Group hosts its Mycological Exhibition in the heart of Tuscany, a showcase dedicated to the world of mushrooms and the ecosystem of the Upper Val di Cecina woods. Hundreds of fresh specimens collected in the days prior are cataloged and displayed with their scientific names, alongside expert advice on identification and safe foraging. A free event that combines naturalistic education, mycological passion, and love for the Pisa province territory.

A window into the kingdom of fungi

The Mycological Exhibition of the Volterra Mycological Group is the autumn event in Volterra that celebrates the fascinating world of mushrooms. Organized by the Volterra Mycological Group (also known as A.M.B. Gruppo Volterra, affiliated with the Tuscan Mycological Groups Association), the exhibition transforms an exhibition hall in the city into a small living museum for a few days, where hundreds of fresh specimens are gathered from the surrounding woods, cataloged, and presented to the public.

Among the hills of the Val di Cecina

Volterra, an ancient Etruscan city perched among the hills of the province of Pisa, in Tuscany, is surrounded by a territory that is exceptionally rich in natural beauty. The woods of the Upper Val di Cecina and the nearby Caselli Forest represent an ideal ecosystem for the growth of numerous fungal species: it is precisely this heritage that the exhibition aims to share with visitors, highlighting the deep bond between the forest, its seasons, and the local inhabitants.

What to expect

During the opening days, members of the group accompany visitors on a journey of discovery through the displayed specimens:

  • Exhibition of fresh mushrooms collected in the preceding days, organized and marked with their scientific names;
  • distinction between edible, toxic, and deadly species, with direct explanations from expert mycologists;
  • tips for safe foraging and the correct identification of the most common local species;
  • educational moments dedicated to enthusiasts, families, and the curious.

An activity that lasts all year

The exhibition is only the most visible part of the Volterra Mycological Group's work, which offers guided forest excursions, study outings, and environmental education initiatives throughout the year in the Upper Val di Cecina area. The event is part of Volterra's rich autumn calendar, a season when the city experiences an intense schedule of events linked to nature and typical products, such as the white truffle. Admission to the exhibition is free, confirming the educational mission of the initiative.
