The musical festival of the Rabenstein band in Corvara, Val Passiria
The Musikfest der Musikkapelle Rabenstein is a musical celebration organized by the brass band of Rabenstein/Corvara, a small high-mountain hamlet in the municipality of Moso in Passiria (Moos in Passeier), in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. It is a genuine South Tyrolean tradition where the local Musikkapelle opens its doors to the community and valley visitors for a day of folk music, gastronomy, and outdoor conviviality.
The day kicks off in the morning with a solemn Mass, celebrated in German, followed by the traditional St. Christopher blessing (Christophorus-Segnung), the patron saint of travelers and motorists. Vehicles are blessed on the festival grounds, a deeply felt ritual in the mountain villages of South Tyrol. Once the religious ceremony concludes, the Rabenstein/Corvara Festplatz transforms into the beating heart of the festivities.
The afternoon is dedicated to musical entertainment. Joining the host band, Musikkapelle Rabenstein, are guest ensembles from neighboring towns, including the Knappenkapelle Ridnaun (the miners' band from Ridanna) and the Hochwilde Böhmische group, which brings the beloved Bohemian and dance music repertoire of South Tyrol to the stage. The sounds of brass and accordions fill the air throughout the day in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
The culinary experience, curated by the Rabenstein community, is a highlight: grilled dishes and barbecue specialties, alongside coffee and homemade cakes prepared by the local farmers' wives (die Bäuerinnen von Rabenstein). It is the perfect opportunity to savor the authentic flavors of the Passiria mountains in a warm and simple setting.
The Musikkapelle Rabenstein's Musikfest is much more than just a concert; it is a festival that keeps the identity of a small alpine hamlet alive and supports the village band. Nestled in the landscape of the upper Val Passiria, at the foot of the Ötztal Alps glaciers, the event offers residents and hikers an ideal stop to experience South Tyrolean folk culture firsthand.
