The theatrical trekking experience by Compagnia (S)legati from Piglionico to Rifugio Rossi, in the municipality of Molazzana
Among the fourteen events of Musica sulle Apuane, the high-altitude cultural festival that lights up the Tuscan mountains every year, the stop in the municipality of Molazzana, in the Province of Lucca, is one of the most evocative and unique. It is not a concert in a church or a square, but a true theatrical trek: theatre that becomes a journey, with the performance accompanying hikers along the trail that climbs from Piglionico to Rifugio Rossi alla Pania, in the heart of the Apuan Alps.
Musica sulle Apuane was born in 2013 from an idea that intertwines culture, nature, and the promotion of mountain territories. It is organized by the Italian Alpine Club (C.A.I.), "Elso Biagi" section of Massa, in collaboration with other Tuscan C.A.I. sections and the Apuan Alps Regional Park, under the artistic direction of pianist Gioia Giusti. Each event winds through mountain huts, churches, forest auditoriums, and Apuan trails, almost always involving an approach hike accompanied by C.A.I. guides, followed by the performance. All events are free of charge, in the spirit of making culture accessible to those who venture into the mountains.
The Molazzana stage is entrusted to Compagnia (S)legati, born from the meeting between Jacopo Maria Bicocchi and Mattia Fabris, which for years has brought theatre along mountain paths, merging walking, acting, and human connection. The show proposed on the Apuan Alps, "La carne dell'Orso", is an itinerant performance designed to be experienced while walking: the narrative unfolds along the path and during breaks, intertwining with the landscape, the physical effort of the hike, and shared reflection on environmental and territorial themes. The experience is part of a multi-day theatrical journey that connects places and memories of the Apuan Alps, also in remembrance of the mountaineer and writer Fosco Maraini.
The starting point is Foce di Piglionico, a stunning panoramic balcony overlooking the Garfagnana, from which you take the path leading to Rifugio Rossi alla Pania (at an altitude of about 1,600 meters), at the foot of Pania della Croce, one of the iconic peaks of the Apuan Alps. It is a classic route of Apuan hiking, immersed in beech forests, sinkholes, and limestone walls, offering spectacular views of the mountain range and the Serchio valley. Arrival at the hut, managed by the C.A.I., crowns the day with the opportunity to refresh yourself at altitude. The stage is part of a program that, year after year, crosses the municipalities of Massa, Carrara, Stazzema, Seravezza, Montignoso, Fivizzano, Bagnone, and, indeed, Molazzana, in Garfagnana.
The 2026 edition of Musica sulle Apuane celebrates the 80th anniversary of women's suffrage in Italy, with the symbolic figure of the "Sirena di Aronte" as a common thread, and provides opportunities for young artists through dedicated scholarships. An occasion to experience the Tuscan mountains in a new way, where culture is not a show to be watched while seated, but an experience to be traversed step by step.
The 14th edition of Musica sulle Apuane, scheduled from April 25 to the end of September 2026 with fourteen free music and theatre events, dedicates its stop in the municipality of Molazzana to a unique experience: a theatrical trek with Compagnia (S)legati. The itinerant show "La carne dell'Orso" accompanies hikers along the trail that climbs from Foce di Piglionico to Rifugio Rossi alla Pania, blending walking, theatre, and shared reflection on the environment. The event is the first of a multi-day theatrical journey on the Apuan Alps. The festival is organized by the C.A.I. of Massa and the Apuan Alps Regional Park, with the artistic direction of Gioia Giusti.
The stage opens the three-day theatrical trek of Compagnia (S)legati, born from the meeting between Jacopo Maria Bicocchi and Mattia Fabris, which brings theatre along mountain paths, uniting walking, theatre, and human connection. The show is an itinerant performance, experienced while walking, which intertwines with the landscape and the stories of the Apuan Alps, also in memory of Fosco Maraini. In the following days, the theatrical journey continues in other municipalities: July 11 at Rifugio Del Freo with "A (S)ragionar di guerra" and July 12 at Col di Favilla with "Antonia Pozzi, la poetessa della montagna".
Departure from Foce di Piglionico, arrival at Rifugio Rossi alla Pania, in the Municipality of Molazzana (LU), Garfagnana, Tuscany.
Piglionico can be reached by car from the Garfagnana, coming up from Gallicano and Fornovolasco or from the Molazzana area, following the signs for Foce di Piglionico. From the nearest motorway exit (Lucca Est, A11), follow the Serchio valley towards Garfagnana. The final road is a mountain road, narrow and with limited parking: it is advisable to arrive early.
The trail to Rifugio Rossi alla Pania starts from Foce di Piglionico: hiking boots, layered clothing, water, and attention to weather conditionsโtypical of the Apuan mountain environmentโare recommended. For those who wish, it is generally possible to walk in a group with C.A.I. guides.
Admission to the show is free and no booking is required. You must be self-sufficient and properly equipped for the hike.
