Music, poetry, and the roots of the blues in the Arena nel Bosco of Casenovole
In Civitella Paganico, in the province of Grosseto, the Music Festival takes on a unique form: instead of a crowded town square, it unfolds in a natural arena carved out of the forest. The initiative is promoted by Celscvil APS and takes place at the Arena nel Bosco di Casenovole, an open-air cultural space set within the environmental art park that the association is developing in this corner of the Maremma. The festival is part of the national Music Festival network but interprets it with its own distinct sensibility, weaving together concerts, nature walks, poetry, and community engagement.
The common thread of the event is the roots of the blues and folk music, explored through the theme of the Ritual of the Earth and the connection to the Celscvil environmental art park concept. The artistic direction is curated by Federico Riondino, a guitarist and singer active since the nineties. Alongside the concerts, storytelling and narratives guide the audience to discover the origins of this music, in a continuous dialogue between sound, word, and landscape.
The festival is spread across several appointments throughout the month of June. It opens with Enrico Cipollini in concert, an evening dedicated to blues and folk, followed by the highlight weekend of "Roots, Blues & Walking Stories": a two-day event alternating guided walks, poetry readings, acoustic concerts, and jam sessions open to everyone. Guests include illustrator and singer-songwriter Marina Girardi, poets Vincenzo Lauria and Francesca Papp, and performer Dome Bulfaro.
The Arena nel Bosco is reached on foot, with a walk of about twenty minutes from the parking lot of the Castello di Casenovole: an approach that is already part of the experience, immersing the spectator in the landscape even before the music begins. The Music Festival in Civitella Paganico is an opportunity to experience the most authentic side of Tuscany, far from the major tourist flows, where music becomes a ritual shared between people and the environment that surrounds them.
The Municipality of Civitella Paganico, in the province of Grosseto, stretches across the hills, woods, and villages of the Tuscan Maremma. Casenovole, with its castle, is one of the most evocative hamlets in the territory and provides an ideal setting for an event that aims to enhance the rural landscape and the community dimension of culture.
The 2026 edition kicks off on Saturday, June 6 with Enrico Cipollini in concert (blues, folk), from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
The heart of the festival is the weekend of June 20 and 21 with "Roots, Blues & Walking Stories". On Saturday, June 20, starting at 6:00 PM, the event opens with a "drawn walk" led by Marina Girardi; at 7:00 PM, a poetry reading with Vincenzo Lauria and Francesca Papp (guitar by Federico Riondino); at 8:30 PM, an acoustic concert by Marina Girardi; at 9:30 PM, the poetry performance "Marcia Film" by Dome Bulfaro. On Sunday, June 21, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the Morning Roots Jam: a musical session open to musicians, singers, and listeners.
The Arena nel Bosco is located in the hamlet of Casenovole, in the Municipality of Civitella Paganico (GR). It can be reached on foot with a walk of about 20 minutes from the parking lot of the Castello di Casenovole. By car, Civitella Paganico is served by the SS223 Grosseto-Siena road.
Admission to the events is free. Participation in the Morning Roots Jam is open to all: anyone can bring their own instrument.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for forest trails. As these are open-air events immersed in nature, it is useful to bring water and insect repellent for the evening hours.
