The widespread jazz festival of the Peligna Valley stops in Prezza, in Piazza Umberto I
Muntagninjazz is one of the most original jazz festivals in Abruzzo: a widespread and itinerant event that brings great live music to the squares, forests, and mountains of the Peligna Valley in the province of L'Aquila every summer. Founded in 2007 and organized by the Muntagninjazz APS association, the festival involves about ten municipalities and dozens of different locations, transforming villages, natural theaters, and mountain trails into open-air stages.
Among the stops on the program is the Municipality of Prezza, a small village in the Peligna Valley nestled on a hill at the foot of the Morrone massif, at the gates of the Majella National Park. Here, the festival finds its natural setting in the historic center, specifically in Piazza Umberto I: an open-air stage where jazz and singer-songwriter music meet the atmosphere of an inland Abruzzo town.
In Prezza, the Muntagninjazz evenings are part of the local summer calendar, enlivening Piazza Umberto I with concerts ranging from swing to jazz, and from singer-songwriter music to tributes to great performers. The performances, often held in the evening under the stars, bring together the local public and the many visitors who choose the Peligna Valley as a summer destination, in a festive atmosphere that enhances the village and its community.
Muntagninjazz is not just a series of concerts: it is a cultural project that enhances the territory of the Peligna Valley and the Abruzzo mountains. Alongside the evenings in the squares of villages like Prezza and the major concerts in Sulmona, the festival offers concert-hikes, theater shows, and original productions. This formula has made Muntagninjazz a recognized model of a widespread festival, capable of intertwining music, art, environment, and sustainable tourism throughout the province of L'Aquila.
Attending a stop of Muntagninjazz also means discovering Prezza, an inland Abruzzo village overlooking the Peligna Valley, with its historic center clustered around the parish church and views of the Morrone and Majella mountains. The bond between the town and the event, in the heart of the Abruzzo Region, makes the Prezza stop one of the most anticipated summer appointments, where live music meets the community life of a small municipality in the province of L'Aquila.
For its 20th anniversary (20th edition), Muntagninjazz returns from July 23 to August 22, 2026, with a program that weaves jazz, singer-songwriter music, concert-hikes, theater, and original productions across ten municipalities of the Peligna Valley, Alto Sangro, and the Sagittario Valley. The anniversary edition includes two previews at the Natural Theater of the Tirino Valley in Capestrano (July 23-24) and the inaugural concert on July 30 at the Bosco Plaja in Introdacqua, in addition to new free concerts in the heart of Sulmona.
The municipalities involved also include Prezza. In this Peligna Valley village, the highlight is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Piazza Umberto I, with a sophisticated tribute to Frank Sinatra signed by Muntagninjazz and entrusted to Gianluca Guidi, accompanied by the Big Fat Band. The concert is part of the Prezza summer program, which enlivens the same square with other musical events in the preceding weeks.
Prezza can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit), just a few kilometers from the toll booth along the Peligna Valley. The nearest train station is Pratola Peligna-Sulmona, on the lines to Rome, Pescara, and L'Aquila, from where you can continue by car towards the village.
Muntagninjazz events in Prezza generally take place in the evening in Piazza Umberto I, in the village's historic center: clothing suitable for summer evenings at altitude is recommended. For schedules, artists, and any booking or entry requirements for the Prezza stop, it is advisable to consult the official website muntagninjazz.it and the festival's social media channels, as well as the pages of the Municipality of Prezza.
