A Franciscan pilgrimage in the Sirente Velino Regional Park, from Aielli to Castelvecchio Subequo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The March for Creation is the signature event of the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park, located in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Established in 2013, the initiative brings together communities, institutions, and citizens every year in a shared commitment to peace, nature, and Franciscan spirituality. The approximately 22-kilometer route connects Aielli to Castelvecchio Subequo, traversing the landscapes of Collarmele and Gagliano Aterno in the heart of the Subequana Valley.
Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of Italy and the patron of the Sirente Velino Park itself. Local tradition links his presence in Abruzzo, and specifically the Subequana Valley, to the site where he reportedly indicated the location for the construction of the convent. The march symbolically retraces this path, blending faith, environmental awareness, and cultural heritage into a unique community experience.
The route touches upon sites of profound significance. At Fonte Cituro, a moment dedicated to environmental protection is traditionally held, featuring the presence of the Carabinieri Forestali. In Baullo, within the territory of Gagliano Aterno, hikers pause at the site linked to the "water miracle" of Saint Francis, where a symbolic gesture of reconciliation between communities is renewed. The journey concludes in Castelvecchio Subequo with an arrival at the Convent of Saint Francis.
The Convent of Saint Francis in Castelvecchio Subequo is a place of immense historical and spiritual value. Founded in the 13th century, it houses the extraordinary relic of the blood of the stigmata of Saint Francis, preserved in a precious reliquary, and hosts a Museum of Sacred Art. Here, the March concludes with a solemn welcome and a religious celebration in honor of the Saint.
The March for Creation is promoted by the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park in collaboration with the guides of Orsa Maggiore Trekking e Ambiente and is part of the CETS-certified sustainable tourism network. The event combines hiking, spirituality, and local promotion, offering participants a day immersed in the mountain landscapes of the Abruzzo Apennines.
Participation requires registration, as spots are limited. A symbolic fee covers insurance and a commemorative kit. A free shuttle service connects Castelvecchio Subequo to the starting point in Aielli, allowing hikers to return comfortably at the end of the day.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the March for Creation have not yet been released. The event, promoted by the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park, has been held in recent years around October 4th, the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, along the approximately 22-kilometer route from Aielli to Castelvecchio Subequo. To stay updated on dates, registration, and the program for the 2026 edition, we recommend consulting the official channels of the Sirente Velino Park.
Castelvecchio Subequo is located in the province of L'Aquila, in the Subequana Valley. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (exits Bussi/Popoli or Pratola Peligna-Sulmona) and the valley's provincial roads. The march starts in Aielli.
Participation is limited, with mandatory booking in the days leading up to the event. A symbolic fee of 5 euros includes insurance and a commemorative kit. A free shuttle service connects Castelvecchio Subequo to Aielli.
The route is approximately 22 kilometers long. We recommend wearing trekking shoes, dressing in layers, and bringing water and a hat. Information and registration are available through the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park and the guides of Orsa Maggiore Trekking e Ambiente.
