A Tolkien-inspired weekend in the Boschetto of Montescudaio
For one weekend, the small village of Montescudaio, in the heart of the province of Pisa, leaves its daily routine behind to don the colors of Middle-earth. Montescudaio Middle-earth is an event dedicated to the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien and the broader fantasy genre, attracting fans, readers, cosplayers, and families from all over Tuscany. The heart of the festival is the Parco Comunale del Boschetto, a green space that, with its trees and winding paths, becomes the perfect setting to feel like a hobbit, an elf, or a wanderer.
The event was born from a desire to blend academic depth with pure fun. The educational side is led by the Italian Tolkien Studies Association (AIST), which brings seminars and meetings to Montescudaio featuring speakers who explore the myths, invented languages, and worlds born from the pen of the Oxford professor. Alongside these more serious sessions, the festival's festive spirit takes center stage, filled with magical atmospheres and active participation.
The program weaves together moments of reflection and experiential activities. Highlights include:
The opening on Saturday afternoon is symbolically marked by the lighting of the fires in the Boschetto, while on Sunday, the festivities continue from morning until late at night.
The setting is Montescudaio, a hilltop village in Tuscany known for its historic center and the wine appellation that bears its name, located just a short distance from the Etruscan Coast and the seaside resorts of the Pisan and Livornese coast. The event is ideally linked to the Tolkien in the Etruscan Valleys festival, serving as a local prelude and helping to make this corner of Tuscany a landmark for fantasy lovers.
Thanks to the variety of activities, Montescudaio Middle-earth appeals to both seasoned fans, drawn by the seminars and in-depth discussions, and families and children, who can enjoy games, cosplay, and workshops in the natural, safe environment of the Boschetto Park.
The inaugural edition of Montescudaio Middle-earth took place over the weekend of June 13 and 14, 2026, at the Parco Comunale del Boschetto. On Saturday, the festival opened its doors from the afternoon until midnight, with the symbolic lighting of the fires in the woods; on Sunday, the event continued from morning until late at night.
The cultural heart of the edition featured AIST seminars, with meetings dedicated to Tolkienian myths, languages, and worlds, led by speakers Gloria Larini, Paolo Nardi, and Diego Luci. Alongside the academic sessions, there was a rotation of music, cosplay and photo sets, historical archery, role-playing and board games, crafts, stalls, and refreshment points with themed food and drinks. The event served as a prelude to the second edition of Tolkien in the Etruscan Valleys, scheduled in Piombino for September 5-6, 2026.
