Tuscan cuisine featuring wild boar in the village of Castiglion Fiorentino
The Montecchio Vesponi Wild Boar Festival is one of the most deeply rooted culinary events in the Valdichiana area. It takes place in the hamlet of Montecchio Vesponi, a small village in the municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino, in the province of Arezzo, nestled at the foot of the striking medieval castle that overlooks the Chio Valley. Organized for over forty years by the G.S. Caccia al Cinghiale in collaboration with the local sports club, the event has become a classic of the Tuscan spring.
The Montecchio festival is an authentic celebration, created by volunteers for the community: proceeds support the sports club and the village's social life. The atmosphere is that of a genuine Tuscan village fair, where people gather at communal tables to share good food and cheer. The festival is held in the covered and heated spaces of the Polisportiva Il Pallone, on Via Giovanni Battista Schiatti, ensuring that spring weather is never an issue.
The true heart of the festival is the kitchen: the menu is quintessentially Tuscan, with wild boar-based first and second courses leading the way. Pappardelle with wild boar ragรน and hearty stews are among the most popular dishes, prepared by the festival's historic chefs, Aldo "Bigghione", Moreno "Staffea", and Giovanni "De Bachialla". Every evening, the pizzeria and beer garden are also open to cater to those who prefer a more informal meal.
As part of the rich calendar of festivals in the province of Arezzo, the Montecchio Vesponi Wild Boar Festival is perfect for those looking to discover the most authentic side of Tuscany, far from the usual tourist circuits. Its proximity to the Montecchio Vesponi Castle and the historic center of Castiglion Fiorentino makes it an excellent destination for a trip that combines gastronomy, landscape, and heritage.
The 47th edition of the Montecchio Vesponi Wild Boar Festival was held over two weekends: Saturday, May 2nd and Sunday, May 3rd, and from Thursday, May 7th to Sunday, May 10th, 2026. The food stands at the Polisportiva Il Pallone offered the classic Tuscan menu with wild boar-based dishes, alongside the specialties of chefs Aldo "Bigghione", Moreno "Staffea", and Giovanni "De Bachialla". The pizzeria and beer garden were also open every evening.
