Chamber music in the medieval village of Montecastelli Pisano
The Montecastelli Piano Chamber Music Festival is one of the most evocative events in the Tuscan summer chamber music scene. It takes place in Montecastelli Pisano, a small medieval hamlet in the municipality of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa, nestled among the metalliferous hills of the upper Val di Cecina. Here, far from grand concert halls, chamber music finds an intimate and exceptional setting: the Auditorium della Musica, housed within a medieval building dating back to the early 13th century.
The festival was born from the passion of Philipp Bonhoeffer, a German physician and musician with deep ties to Tuscany, and the Science & Music Foundation (Associazione Il Poggio). The founding idea is that artistic and scientific thought can enrich one another: in Montecastelli, musicians, scientists, and young performers meet, work together, and share the village for several weeks each summer. This spirit also gave rise to the Chamber Lab, a workshop dedicated to training new piano chamber music ensembles.
The program alternates between public evening concerts, masterclasses, and study sessions. Over the years, it has hosted international performers; the artistic direction of the masterclasses has been entrusted to figures such as violinist Lukas Hagen, while past editions have featured works by Haydn, Beethoven, Ravel, Brahms, Strauss, and Elgar. Concerts generally take place in the evening, when the village gathers around the Auditorium to listen to quartets, trios, and chamber ensembles.
Attending a concert in Montecastelli Pisano also means immersing yourself in an authentic corner of inland Tuscany, far from mass tourism circuits. The village, with its stone houses and panoramic views of the Val di Cecina hills, is part of a territory rich in tradition and nature, where geothermal energy and mining history coexist with a landscape of rare beauty. The festival helps to showcase this part of the province of Pisa, combining the quality of great chamber music with the hospitality of a small community.
From July 15 to 25, 2026, Montecastelli Pisano hosts a new edition of the festival, with evening concerts (generally between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM) at the Auditorium della Musica. Alongside the public concerts, the Chamber Lab continuesโa workshop dedicated to training new piano chamber music ensembles, bringing together promising young artists.
The concerts are held in the evocative Auditorium housed in a medieval building in the village, within the municipality of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina (Province of Pisa, Tuscany).
The concert schedule for the 2026 edition runs from July 15 to 25, 2026, with evening performances at the Auditorium della Musica in Montecastelli Pisano (typically 7:00 PM โ 9:00 PM).
The detailed program for individual concerts, including performers and repertoire, will be announced by the Science & Music Foundation closer to the event. Recent editions have featured great chamber repertoire (Haydn, Beethoven, Ravel, Brahms, Strauss, Elgar) with international performers and artistic direction from musicians such as Lukas Hagen.
