About Monte Nerone Festival

For an entire weekend, Piobbico, in the heart of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, becomes the base camp for the Monte Nerone Festival: two days dedicated to the mountains and outdoor adventure on the slopes of one of the most beautiful peaks of the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. Hiking and mountain biking, climbing, caving, canyoning, paragliding, and plenty of good local cuisine intertwine in a widespread event designed for nature lovers, sports enthusiasts, and those who appreciate authentic villages in the Marche region.

A base camp at the foot of Monte Nerone

The Monte Nerone Festival – Piobbico Base Camp transforms the village of Piobbico, in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, into the ideal starting point for exploring one of the most fascinating massifs in the Marche region for a weekend. The formula is simple and stated by the organizers themselves: "a base camp to explore our territory in every possible way". From here, excursions, sports activities, and convivial moments depart, inviting residents and visitors to experience the mountains firsthand.

Monte Nerone, a realm of gorges, caves, and beech forests

Monte Nerone is one of the highest peaks in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines and dominates the Candigliano river valley with steep slopes, carved by gorges, natural arches, and canyons in the limestone rock. It is a territory beloved by outdoor enthusiasts: hiking, mountain biking, climbing, canyoning, and caving are practiced among its beech forests and rock faces. The numerous caves, such as the famous Grotta di Nerone (or Grotta della Moneta) which opens on the north face near the Gola dell'Infernaccio, hold prehistoric evidence, including remains of cave bears.

Festival activities

The Base Camp program focuses on direct experience of the mountains. Among the offerings that characterize the event are:

  • Trekking and guided excursions along the most beautiful trails of Monte Nerone, accompanied by local guides;
  • Cycling and mountain biking tours connecting the mountain villages such as Pianello, Apecchio, Serravalle di Carda, and Piobbico;
  • Rock climbing, caving, and canyoning among caves and canyons;
  • Paragliding, with exhibitions and demonstrations;
  • moments dedicated to local gastronomy, to discover the flavors of the Marche hinterland.

Piobbico, the village of the 'Brutti'

The event is set against the backdrop of Piobbico, a charming medieval village located at about 339 meters above sea level at the confluence of the Biscubio and Candigliano streams. The town is world-famous as the home of the Club dei Brutti (Club of the Ugly), founded here in 1879, and serves as a perfect base for those who want to alternate high-altitude adventure with the discovery of the history and traditions of the Marche Region. The festival was born from the collaboration between the Municipalities sharing Monte Nerone, united in valuing this extraordinary natural heritage.

Monte Nerone Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Monte Nerone Festival took place in Piobbico (PU) on May 30 and 31, with the village transformed into a base camp for exploring the mountains in every possible way: hiking, outdoor sports activities, and moments dedicated to discovering the territory.
