A base camp in Piobbico to experience the mountain in every possible way
The Monte Nerone Festival – Piobbico Base Camp transforms the village of Piobbico, in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, into the ideal starting point for exploring one of the most fascinating massifs in the Marche region for a weekend. The formula is simple and stated by the organizers themselves: "a base camp to explore our territory in every possible way". From here, excursions, sports activities, and convivial moments depart, inviting residents and visitors to experience the mountains firsthand.
Monte Nerone is one of the highest peaks in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines and dominates the Candigliano river valley with steep slopes, carved by gorges, natural arches, and canyons in the limestone rock. It is a territory beloved by outdoor enthusiasts: hiking, mountain biking, climbing, canyoning, and caving are practiced among its beech forests and rock faces. The numerous caves, such as the famous Grotta di Nerone (or Grotta della Moneta) which opens on the north face near the Gola dell'Infernaccio, hold prehistoric evidence, including remains of cave bears.
The Base Camp program focuses on direct experience of the mountains. Among the offerings that characterize the event are:
The event is set against the backdrop of Piobbico, a charming medieval village located at about 339 meters above sea level at the confluence of the Biscubio and Candigliano streams. The town is world-famous as the home of the Club dei Brutti (Club of the Ugly), founded here in 1879, and serves as a perfect base for those who want to alternate high-altitude adventure with the discovery of the history and traditions of the Marche Region. The festival was born from the collaboration between the Municipalities sharing Monte Nerone, united in valuing this extraordinary natural heritage.
On the weekend of May 30 and 31, 2026, the Monte Nerone Festival returned with the Base Camp in Piobbico formula. For two days, the village in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino was the starting point for a rich program of outdoor activities on the slopes of Monte Nerone, designed to experience the mountains firsthand.
The 2026 edition offered the traditional base camp formula, with activities spread between the village of Piobbico and the slopes of Monte Nerone.
The detailed schedule for each activity was communicated by the organizers through the official channels of Monte Nerone and the involved Municipalities.
The base camp is set up in Piobbico (PU), with activities spread across the slopes and trails of Monte Nerone and in the nearby villages (Apecchio, Pianello, Serravalle di Carda).
By car: Piobbico is accessible from the SS Apecchiese (Acqualagna–Apecchio) and the internal road network of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino. The nearest train station is in Fano or Pesaro, from which you can continue by car towards the hinterland.
Appropriate clothing and footwear for mountain hiking are recommended. For activities requiring registration or accompaniment (guided excursions, climbing, caving), it is advisable to check the procedures and availability in advance through the official channels of Monte Nerone and the organizing Municipalities.
