The widespread festival that tells and brings to life the inland areas of the Apennines in the Pesaro area
Happennino is the cultural and environmental festival that has been enlivening the inland areas of the Apennines between the provinces of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region, for several years. Founded to give voice and new vitality to small mountain villages, the festival is now a key event for those who want to experience the Marche hinterland authentically, far from the most beaten tourist routes. The event is organised by the Happennino Cultural Association and involves a network of Municipalities in the upper Metauro valley.
Among the protagonist municipalities, the Municipality of Peglio (Province of Pesaro and Urbino) holds a special place: at 700 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest villages in the hinterland and overlooks a panorama stretching from the Metauro hills to the Adriatic Sea. The Torre del Girone, an ancient symbol of the village, traditionally hosts the festival's discussion meetings, particularly those dedicated to the future of the highlands, experienced at sunset in a secluded and evocative atmosphere.
Happennino is a widespread and itinerant event: the appointments are distributed across several municipalities in the upper Metauro valley, including Peglio, Piobbico, Mercatello sul Metauro, Borgo Pace, Sant'Angelo in Vado, and Lunano. Each village hosts a segment of the programme, transforming the entire valley into a large open-air stage. This format allows visitors to discover churches, convents, archaeological areas, squares, and paths that rarely enter traditional circuits.
Happennino's programme combines a cultural dimension with attention to the environment through a varied and high-profile schedule:
What makes Happennino a special festival is its ability to intertwine the live cultural experience with the identity of the places: each event is designed to dialogue with the landscape and the community that hosts it. Over the years, the event has become a laboratory on the theme of inland areas, capable of attracting prominent national guests and an attentive and curious audience to the Marche, who appreciate a slow and immersive festival experience.
The ninth edition of Happennino is confirmed for 2026 on the event's official website. As per tradition, the festival is expected to take place over several September weekends, enlivening the municipalities of the upper Metauro valley, including Peglio, which hosts the meetings at the Torre del Girone.
Among the artists already announced for the 2026 edition are prominent names from the Italian cultural and musical scene. The complete programme, with precise dates, times, and locations for each event, will be announced by the Happennino Cultural Association closer to the event: it is advisable to follow the official website and social media channels for updates.
Programme under development. As in previous editions, the festival will include concerts, meetings and readings, performative shows, nature treks, workshops, and gastronomic events spread across the hinterland villages. In Peglio, the discussion meetings will be held at the Torre del Girone. The precise dates and the complete calendar will be published by the organisation.
Peglio is located in the hinterland of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the upper Metauro valley. By car, it can be reached from the Fano-Grosseto highway (E78) by exiting towards Sant'Angelo in Vado and continuing along the provincial roads towards the village. The nearest train station and airport are in Pesaro and the Rimini-Ancona area.
The festival is spread across multiple municipalities: some events are free to enter, while concerts and workshops often require advance booking. It is advisable to consult the official website happennino.com and social media channels for the complete programme, exact locations, and access methods.
As it is an itinerant event held in mountain villages, it is advisable to plan car travel between the different locations and wear comfortable shoes for trekking. Evenings at high altitude can be cool, even in September.
