The parade of floats and masks in the village of Montalbano, near Fasano
The Montalbano Carnival is one of the most beloved popular festivals in the districts of Fasano, in the Province of Brindisi, Apulia. Every year, during the Carnival season, the streets of Montalbano—a small village south of the main town of Fasano—are filled with allegorical floats, confetti, streamers, and masked groups, creating a joyful and vibrant parade that involves the entire community.
The event is managed by the Associazione Gli Amici del Carnevale di Montalbano, which for several years has brought together volunteers, families, and local youth to build the floats and organize the parade. Originally a spontaneous village celebration, it has grown over the years into a staple of the Fasano Carnival calendar, attracting participants from well beyond the borders of Montalbano.
The heart of the event is the float parade that travels through the main streets of the village, accompanied by music, dancing, and colorful costumes. The procession traditionally ends in Piazza della Libertà, where the party continues with music and entertainment until the evening. In keeping with local tradition, the lighthearted ritual of the 'Carnival funeral' also takes place, bringing the festivities to a cheerful close.
The Montalbano Carnival is designed primarily for families and children: the costumes, themed floats, and festive atmosphere make it one of the most anticipated winter events in Apulia. Admission is free, and participation is open to everyone, both residents and visitors.
To reach Montalbano from Fasano, local bus services are usually diverted during the parade days to allow for the procession; it is advisable to check for alternative routes before traveling.
The 2026 edition of the Montalbano Carnival brought the Fasano district to life with three days of festivities organized by the 'Gli Amici del Carnevale di Montalbano' Association. Allegorical floats, masks, confetti, and music paraded through the village streets, ending as tradition dictates in Piazza della Libertà.
Parade route: starting from Via Aspromonte (corner of Via Mascagni), then Via Redipuglia, Via Mola, Via Maroncelli, Via Rosato, and Via Teano, with arrival and final party in Piazza della Libertà.
