A week of world-class dance across the squares of Moncalvo and the Open Air Stage at Orsolina28
Moncalvo in Danza is the festival that brings world-class dance to the town of Moncalvo, in the Province of Asti, every summer—a jewel of the Monferrato region, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally founded as a competition, it has grown into a landmark event in the Italian dance scene. Under the artistic direction of Massimiliano Vacchina, the festival engages dozens of young dancers, internationally renowned instructors, and a large audience that fills the town's squares each year.
The beating heart of the event is the Summer Camp, a week dedicated to artistic growth and study in classical, modern, and contemporary dance. Lessons and masterclasses take place at Orsolina28, an international hub for the performing arts nestled among the hills and vineyards of Monferrato, just minutes from Moncalvo. Here, participants selected from all over Italy work side-by-side with world-class masters and choreographers, alternating between academic technique, repertoire, and contemporary creation.
Alongside the training, Moncalvo in Danza offers a rich program of free evening performances that bring Piazza Garibaldi to life, culminating in the grand final Gala at the Open Air Stage of Orsolina28, an outdoor theater set amidst the vineyards. Tango, urban dance, tributes to Italian music, and choreography by the Camp participants follow one another in evenings that combine artistic quality with a festive atmosphere, making dance accessible to everyone.
Having become a case study in cultural economics due to its impact on the local area, Moncalvo in Danza demonstrates how a festival can generate value for a small town in Piedmont. The Summer Camp consistently sells out well in advance, drawing families, enthusiasts, and industry professionals to Monferrato. The event is supported by the Municipality of Moncalvo and local partners, standing as one of the most anticipated events of the Asti summer.
The nineteenth edition of Moncalvo in Danza confirms the formula that made the festival famous: a week of high-level dance training at Orsolina28, accompanied by free evening performances open to the public. The 2026 Summer Camp, sold out well in advance, brings together dancers from all over Italy and a panel of international instructors for masterclasses in classical, repertoire, modern, and contemporary dance.
The evenings enliven Piazza Garibaldi and culminate in the Gala at the Open Air Stage among the Monferrato vineyards, under the artistic direction of Massimiliano Vacchina.
The Summer Camp masterclasses (July 5–12) are held at Orsolina28 with classical and repertoire teachers such as Ludmill Çakalli, Kristina Grigorova, and Dorian Grori, and for contemporary and modern dance with Francesco Annarumma and Simone Nolasco, in addition to choreographic workshops.
Moncalvo is located in the Province of Asti, in the Monferrato region. By car, it is accessible via the A21 (Asti exit) or the A26. Evening performances are held in Piazza Garibaldi in the historic center; Summer Camp activities and the final Gala take place at Orsolina28 in the surrounding countryside.
Evening performances in Piazza Garibaldi are free of charge. Participation in the Summer Camp requires registration, and spots are limited: the 2026 edition was sold out by February.
The festival takes place in the first half of July. We recommend booking accommodation in the Moncalvo and Monferrato area well in advance.
