The 11 km road race from Ispica to Pozzallo, spanning the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa
The Moncada Race - Angelo Moncada Memorial is an 11 km road race held in the territories of Ispica and Pozzallo, in the province of Ragusa, at the south-eastern tip of Sicily. It is not a standalone event; it was created as a 'sister' race within the major sporting day of the Mezza Maratona delle Due Province, an event that every spring ideally connects the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa through the towns of Rosolini, Ispica, and Pozzallo.
The Moncada Race starts at Piazzale della Moncada, in Contrada Scavuzzo, Ispica. From here, athletes join a section of the half-marathon route, running through the Ispica countryside among citrus and almond groves until reaching the finish line on the Pozzallo seafront. Organizers describe the course as fast and accessible, yet fully certified and part of the official event: the ideal choice for those who want to experience the atmosphere of a major competition without tackling the full 21.097 km distance.
The race is dedicated to the memory of Angelo Moncada and runs alongside the Piero Assenza Memorial, which gives its name to the half-marathon. The event is organized by A.S.D. Pietro Guarino Rosolini with the patronage of the involved municipalities, and is a valid stage of the regional 'Mare e Monti' Half-Marathon Grand Prix, representing one of the first seasonal tests. Beyond the competition, the day offers services designed for athletes: refreshment points along the route, medical assistance, chip timing, race packs, bag storage, and a free shuttle service for the return to the starting locations.
The Moncada Race appeals to both competitive runners and amateurs alike: the shorter distance encourages wider participation, drawing a large number of running enthusiasts from south-eastern Sicily and beyond. Running between Ispica and Pozzallo means traversing a corner of Baroque and maritime Sicily, in one of the most evocative areas of the UNESCO-listed Val di Noto. For Ispica, a town in the Ragusa area famous for its Cava and late-Baroque architecture, the event is also an opportunity to promote the region within the regional running calendar.
The 2026 Moncada Race took place on Sunday, April 19, 2026, concurrently with the second edition of the Mezza Maratona delle Due Province organized by A.S.D. Pietro Guarino Rosolini. The 11 km race started at 10:15 AM from Piazzale della Moncada, in Contrada Scavuzzo, Ispica, with the finish line on the Pozzallo seafront.
There were 101 participants (81 men and 20 women), confirming the growing interest in the day's most accessible distance. The race, valid as a stage of the 'Mare e Monti' Grand Prix, offered a fast yet certified course, integrated into the official context of the 'Due Province' event.
The race was held alongside the Mezza Maratona delle Due Province (21.097 km, starting at 9:30 AM from Piazza Garibaldi in Rosolini).
Ispica is located in south-eastern Sicily, in the province of Ragusa. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 (Syracuse-Gela); the Ispica train station is on the Syracuse-Modica-Ragusa line. The Moncada Race starts at Piazzale della Moncada in Contrada Scavuzzo, on the outskirts of Ispica. The finish line is on the Pozzallo seafront.
Athletes are expected to gather in the morning, with the start scheduled around 10:15 AM. A free shuttle service is available for the return to the starting locations. Refreshment points, medical assistance, chip timing, and bag storage are provided.
Registration is done online (via the ENDU platform) and is reserved for FIDAL-registered athletes and Runcard holders, with limited spots available. For details and fees, please consult the A.S.D. Pietro Guarino Rosolini website.
