Two evenings of flavor and maritime tradition in the southernmost village of Sicily

Overlooking the sea at the southernmost tip of Sicily, where the Ionian Sea meets the Mediterranean, Portopalo di Capo Passero (province of Syracuse) is an authentic fishing village whose identity has always been tied to the sea. It is here, every early September, that the Fish Festival takes place, a popular celebration honoring the star product of this coastal land and the local culinary tradition.
The event is held in Piazza Terrazza dei Due Mari, the panoramic square in the heart of the town, just a short walk from the fishing port. The festival takes place in early September, with evenings starting around 7:00 PM and continuing late into the night with food stalls, music, and entertainment.
The absolute star is the fresh catch from the local Portopalo fleet, served according to traditional Sicilian recipes. Dishes featured at the festival stalls include:
Tuna, in particular, tells the story of Portopalo and its ancient tuna fishery (tonnara): for centuries, tuna fishing was the heart of the economy in this extreme corner of Sicily.
The Fish Festival is more than just a treat for the palate: both evenings are enlivened by music, dancing, and performances, creating a festive atmosphere that brings together residents and visitors alike. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the conviviality of the village and discover a still-authentic corner of Sicily.
The festival is also a great reason to explore Portopalo and its surroundings: the Isola delle Correnti, the Island of Capo Passero with its fortress, the white sandy beaches, and the nearby Vendicari Nature Reserve, a paradise for migratory birds. An experience that combines taste, sea, and nature in the extreme South of Sicily.
The Fish Festival returns every year in early September to Portopalo di Capo Passero, in the province of Syracuse. For the 2026 edition, the official dates and the detailed program have not yet been communicated: information will be published by the Gli Amici di Portopalo Association in the weeks leading up to the event.
Maintaining the format of previous years, two evenings are expected in Piazza Terrazza dei Due Mari with food stalls dedicated to the fresh local catch, accompanied by music, dancing, and performances. We recommend checking for updates on the official channels of the Municipality and the organizing association.
