The Nativity comes to life in the cloister of the Basilica Madonna dei Martiri
In the heart of the Christmas season, the cloister of the Basilica Madonna dei Martiri in Molfetta, located on the Adriatic coast in the province of Bari, hosts one of the most evocative living nativities in Puglia. Organized by the APS Melphicta Nel Passato association in collaboration with the Basilica's friars, the event turns the cloister and the historic Ospedaletto dei Crociati into a large open-air stage where the Nativity is reenacted before the eyes of visitors.
The route features approximately one hundred performers and actors distributed across four distinct settings. The itinerary weaves together biblical tales from the Old and New Testaments with depictions of daily life from the past—the context in which Saint Francis of Assisi created the first living nativity in history in Greccio in 1223—culminating in the essential reconstruction of Bethlehem at year zero.
In recent years, the event has taken on a strong inclusive and community dimension, inviting visitors to rediscover the value of memory, tradition, and the shared spirit of Christmas. The nativity displays set up at the Ospedaletto dei Crociati are curated by L'Arte del Rosario di Monaco Vincenzo, which enriches the path with artisanal artifacts.
The highlight coincides with Epiphany: on January 6th, the traditional Procession of the Three Wise Men travels through the city to reach the Nativity, a ritual that brings the Molfetta Christmas season to a beautiful close and attracts numerous families from across the Bari area.
Admission to the Living Nativity is free. Every evening, the event welcomes a continuous stream of visitors—families, young people, and seniors alike—with recent years recording record-breaking attendance. It is an opportunity to experience an authentic moment of Christmas, blending faith, art, and emotion within the historic and spiritual setting of one of Molfetta's most iconic landmarks.
The Molfetta Living Nativity returned to animate the cloister of the Basilica Madonna dei Martiri and the historic Ospedaletto dei Crociati on the evenings of December 26 and 27, 2025, and January 5 and 6, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with free admission.
Organized by the APS Melphicta Nel Passato association with the Basilica's friars, the edition featured about one hundred performers across four settings: from the fisherman's boat and the sailor repairing nets to the tavern, wine merchants, the carpenter, and the ropemaker, culminating in the reconstruction of Bethlehem. The opening night on December 26 saw record-breaking attendance with a continuous flow of visitors.
For Epiphany, the Procession of the Three Wise Men was scheduled for January 6th, departing in the morning from the Villa Comunale; the association announced that the planned cavalcade could not take place with horses for technical and safety reasons.
