A medieval festival in the courtyard of South Tyrol's iconic castle
The Mittelalterfest is the grand medieval festival that brings Castel Tirolo (Schloss Tirol) to life every spring. Perched above the municipality of Tirolo (Tirol) in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige, Castel Tirolo is no ordinary fortress: it is the historic cradle of the County of Tyrol, the very place that gave its name to the entire historical region. Hosting a medieval re-enactment here means bringing the atmosphere of the Alpine Middle Ages back to life amidst authentic walls and panoramic views over the Adige Valley and the Merano basin.
The heart of the event features spectacular sword fighting by the Knights of Andrian (Ritter von Andrian), who face off in the castle courtyard to revive the art of medieval martial combat. Alongside the duels, the program offers live music with minstrels and early music ensembles, dance performances, and, weather permitting, falconry demonstrations that provide a fascinating glimpse into the art of hunting with birds of prey.
A medieval market winds through the castle courtyards, featuring stalls with artisans and merchants in costume displaying period goods and crafts. Families with children will find plenty to enjoy: XXL wooden games, workshops, and activities designed for the little ones make the festival an experience suitable for all ages. Visitors can also explore the entire castle and its museum rooms, combining the festivities with a discovery of South Tyrol's historical heritage.
The convivial aspect is not to be missed: food stands offer dishes inspired by tradition, such as knights' soup (Rittersuppe), grilled specialties, and lard bread, all accompanied by spiced wine and fresh craft beer. It is the perfect opportunity to savor South Tyrolean hospitality in a timeless setting.
The Mittelalterfest takes place rain or shine, from 10 am to 6 pm, and is organized by the provincial historical-cultural museum based at Castel Tirolo, in collaboration with the Tirolo Tourist Board. For years, the festival has captivated both adults and children, establishing itself as one of the most beloved spring events in the Burggrafenamt and the entire province of Bolzano.
On May 2nd and 3rd, 2026, Castel Tirolo hosted the annual edition of the Mittelalterfest, confirmed over two days from 10 am to 6 pm. The highlights were the spectacular sword fights by the Knights of Andrian (Ritter von Andrian), accompanied by the music of medieval minstrels (Medieval Minstrels) and dance performances by the "Perle d'Oriente". In the castle courtyards, visitors enjoyed the historical market, XXL wooden games for families, and, with a bit of luck, falconry demonstrations.
The food stands offered knights' soup, grilled specialties, spiced wine, and craft beer. The event took place regardless of weather conditions, with the opportunity to visit the entire castle.
Castel Tirolo is located in Tirolo (Tirol), above Merano, in the province of Bolzano. By car, you can reach the village of Tirolo; from the parking areas, a scenic walking path (about 20 minutes on foot) leads to the castle. Alternatively, a shuttle service is available during festival days. Bus connections to Tirolo are available from Merano.
Hours: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Admission: €10 for adults; family ticket €20 (2 adults with children under 16) or mini-family €10 (1 adult with children under 16).
