The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of an Irpinian village
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In December, the historic center of Mirabella Eclano, a town in the province of Avellino in Campania, transforms into a grand Christmas stage. The Living Nativity brings the representation of the Nativity into the village alleys: squares, courtyards, and ancient workshops become living tableaux that the public walks through, following a route mapped out in the oldest part of the town.
The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco «La Fenice» association in collaboration with various local entities. In the 2024 edition, the fifth, the performance took place on Saturday, December 14th, starting at 5:00 PM—a time chosen specifically because the winter darkness and the lights along the path give the village its most evocative atmosphere.
The common thread is the classic one of Southern Italian living nativity scenes: the Holy Family, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, and common folk. The characters are portrayed primarily by local children dressed in traditional clothing, accompanied by adults from the associations that manage the setup. The scenes are distributed along the streets of the historic center, making the visit a slow stroll, suitable even for families with young children.
In Mirabella Eclano, the nativity scene is not an isolated event. For over thirty years, the town has also held the Living Via Crucis, which reached its thirty-third edition in 2026: a tradition that explains the naturalness with which dozens of volunteers engage every year with costumes, sets, and rehearsals. Here, the sacred representation is a form of collective storytelling before it is a show, and the Living Nativity is its Christmas counterpart.
The town sits at an altitude of about 372 meters, between the Calore basin and the Ufita valley, and has just over 6,500 inhabitants; the territory includes the hamlets of Calore, Passo, and Pianopantano. The ancient Roman city of Aeclanum was located right here along the Appian Way: the archaeological park and an Eneolithic chamber tomb necropolis can be visited, revealing a historical stratification that few Irpinian villages can boast. The current center was born from the ruins of the ancient city and took the name Mirabella Eclano in 1862.
For the rest of the year, the town is best known for the Festa del Carro in honor of Maria Santissima Addolorata, featuring a 25-meter-high straw obelisk pulled through the streets in September. The December Living Nativity represents the other pole of the local ritual calendar: more intimate and collected, yet built with the same spirit of popular participation.
The performance is part of the town's wider Christmas calendar. In 2025, the «Natale Eclanese» program offered over twenty events between December 8th and January 5th, including markets with local products, choral concerts, theatrical performances, bingo games, and the «Santa Claus Village», held for the fourth time at Parco Mirella in Pianopantano and open on weekends. Those arriving for the nativity scene will likely find a town in full festive spirit from the afternoon onwards.
As of the update of this guide, the 2026 edition has not yet been officially announced: neither the date nor the program has been released. The Pro Loco «La Fenice» typically communicates details in the weeks leading up to Christmas through its channels and the local Irpinian press. It is therefore essential to verify the confirmation of the event before traveling.
The Mirabella Eclano Living Nativity does not rely on massive numbers or spectacular effects: its strength lies in the human scale of the village, the light of December evenings, and the fact that the actors are local residents. It is a simple and honest way to connect with inland Irpinia, a place rarely visited in winter that opens up to visitors precisely on these occasions.
For the 2026 edition, there are currently no official announcements from the Pro Loco «La Fenice», which organizes the event in the historic center of Mirabella Eclano, in the province of Avellino. Neither the date nor the layout of the scenes has been released.
In documented editions, the performance has been held in December, on a Saturday, starting around 5:00 PM and unfolding along the alleys of the ancient village. It is likely that the 2026 event will also be part of the local Christmas program, but this is a forecast based on custom rather than confirmed data.
Those intending to participate are invited to check for date confirmation on the Pro Loco «La Fenice» channels and in the local Irpinian press before planning their visit.
Historic center of Mirabella Eclano (AV), ZIP 83036, Campania. The route is entirely on foot through the alleys of the ancient village.
By car: the municipal territory is crossed by the A16 Naples–Canosa motorway and the state road 90 delle Puglie, which quickly connect the town to Avellino and Benevento. Regional bus lines connect Mirabella Eclano to the main centers of Campania. It is advisable to leave the car in the parking lots on the edge of the center, as the village streets are narrow and partially closed to traffic during the event.
