In Pila ai Piani di Frigento, the farming community gives thanks for the wheat harvest
The Thanksgiving Festival in Pila ai Piani, a rural district of the municipality of Frigento in the province of Avellino (Campania), is the event where the local farming community celebrates the end of the harvest season. Once the wheat has been reaped and the fields are bare, families from the district gather to give thanks for a good agricultural year—an ancient custom that has never become a mere tourist attraction, but remains a living practice repeated every year at the end of summer.
The heart of the day is religious. The Maria Santissima Immacolata Parish leads the prayer of the Holy Rosary and the celebration of an outdoor Holy Mass, followed by the blessing of agricultural machinery: tractors, vehicles, and tools are lined up and blessed in a rite that combines gratitude toward the Holy Trinity and the Blessed Virgin Mary with recognition of the hard work of those who till the land. It is how Pila ai Piani continues to pass on its rural roots to new generations, without rhetoric or spectacle.
The festival carries on the tradition of the ancient threshing festival, which once took place in these very open spaces, where wheat was threshed and cleaned, and collective work became an opportunity for social gathering. In 2025, the gathering was held in the «Tre Masserie» square, a symbolic place of local rural tradition; for 2026, the municipal program designates the Torretta al Parco as the venue, still within the Pila ai Piani district.
The town hosting the festival is no ordinary place: Frigento stands at an altitude of 911 meters, overlooking one of the widest panoramas in Irpinia, and in November 2023, it joined the «Most Beautiful Villages in Italy» circuit. Its territory is agricultural by vocation, with wheat, olive groves, and vineyards, and wheat itself returns in the town's most famous ritual: the tirata dei carri di covoni, the ancient parade of carts decorated with stalks and ears of wheat that crosses the village every August 15th in honor of the Assumption and Saint Roch, as an offering of thanksgiving for the harvest. The Pila ai Piani festival is the local district's variation of that same sentiment.
The event is part of the Frigento Summer 2026 program, a calendar promoted by the Municipality of Frigento together with the Pro Loco Frigentina APS, the Youth Forum, the Public Assistance, Frimact, and the Associazione Organetto 2020: dozens of events from June to the end of August, spread across the Villa Comunale, the PAF field, the Caritas Center, Piano della Croce, and other town squares. The Thanksgiving Festival represents its final act, following the Organetto Festival in mid-August, the celebrations for the Assumption and Saint Roch with the parade of carts, and the Beer Festival on August 23rd and 24th.
Those looking for the Campania of major spectacles will find something entirely different here: a small, late-August festival that is completely unpretentious and all the more valuable for it. It is the perfect opportunity to combine a visit to the historic center of Frigento—with its viewpoints over the valley and traces of a Roman and medieval past—with an afternoon in the districts, where agricultural life still marks the calendar of the year.
The date is confirmed by the official Frigento Summer 2026 calendar: Thursday, August 27, at the Torretta al Parco in Pila ai Piani, a rural district of the Municipality of Frigento, in the province of Avellino. The festival closes a summer season that began in June and was organized by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco Frigentina APS, the Youth Forum, the Public Assistance, Frimact, and the Associazione Organetto 2020.
The meaning of the event remains the same as always: to give thanks for a good harvest once the wheat reaping is finished, in continuity with the ancient threshing festival that used to take place in these very fields. The core of the day is religious and communal, with prayer, an outdoor Eucharistic celebration, and the blessing of agricultural machinery.
The times and the detailed schedule for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the municipal administration: as every year, details are communicated close to the date through the social media channels of the Municipality of Frigento and the Maria Santissima Immacolata Parish.
The festival is held in the Pila ai Piani district, in the lower part of the Frigento municipal territory (AV), postal code 83040. Venue for 2026: the Torretta al Parco. In 2025, the gathering took place in the «Tre Masserie» square.
By car: A16 Naples–Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda, then follow provincial roads toward Frigento; the district is located along the plain, below the village which stands at 911 meters. Local public transport is limited on summer evenings: a car remains the most practical solution. Parking is available in open spaces near the festival area.
A popular event with free admission. Any food and drink purchases are paid for on-site or provided by the organizing community.
Bring a light jacket: even in August, in Alta Irpinia, evenings cool down quickly after sunset. Check times and confirmations on the social media channels of the Municipality of Frigento and the parish, as the Frigento Summer program may be subject to changes.
Agritourisms and bed and breakfasts in the Frigento area and in nearby towns of eastern Irpinia (Sturno, Gesualdo, Grottaminarda, Ariano Irpino).
