About Little Masks Parade

Every February, the Miano district on the northern outskirts of Naples turns into a massive open-air theater. The Little Masks Parade brings together local schools for a Carnival procession that starts at Villa Russo, winds through via Miano and via Lazio, and finishes at the La Birreria shopping center. Masked children, parents, teachers, and street performers bring the route to life, culminating in traveling shows, mascots, and entertainment at the Urban Park. Participation is free and open to all.

A Carnival that belongs to the neighborhood

In Miano, a district in the northern suburbs of Naples—part of the 7th Municipality alongside Secondigliano and San Pietro a Patierno—Carnival isn't just a spectacle to watch: it's something you experience together. The Little Masks Parade is the school and neighborhood procession that brings hundreds of costumed children, their teachers, and their families to the streets every year between late February and the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday. There are no monumental floats like in Viareggio or Putignano: here, the spotlight is entirely on the little ones, their homemade costumes, and the papier-mâché masks crafted in class over the preceding weeks.

The route: from Villa Russo to La Birreria

The meeting point is set early in the morning at the former Villa Russo, a historic complex on via Miano currently at the center of a long-standing local debate regarding the recovery of public spaces in the district. From there, the procession sets off at 9:00 AM, traveling along via Miano and via Lazio—two main arteries running through the heart of the neighborhood—until it reaches the La Birreria Shopping Center, which was built on the site of the former Peroni brewery and has become one of the area's main social hubs.

Throughout the journey, the procession is accompanied by masked street performers: stilt walkers, jugglers, and entertainers who set the pace, manage traffic, and turn an ordinary Friday morning in February into a moment of collective celebration.

Arrival and festivities at the Urban Park

Upon arrival, the Urban Park and the shopping center's gallery transform into an open-air theater. The program continues until late morning with children's entertainment, mascots, traveling shows, and live music—often provided in previous years by musical groups from local schools. In case of bad weather, the festivities are not canceled; they simply move indoors to the structure's interior spaces.

Schools take center stage

The true driving force behind the event is the network of comprehensive schools in Miano and neighboring districts, which has grown over the years from a dozen to over twenty participating schools, spanning preschool, primary, and middle school levels. For many classes, preparing for the parade becomes a full-fledged educational project: workshops for masks, posters, choreography, and shared themes related to peace, the environment, or neighborhood identity.

  • Procession open to schools, families, and residents
  • Departure from Villa Russo, arrival at the La Birreria Shopping Center
  • Street performers, mascots, and entertainment along the route
  • Shows and music at the Urban Park upon arrival
  • Completely free entry and participation

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Associazione Miano Protagonista, a third-sector organization active in the district, in collaboration with local schools and with the patronage of the 7th Municipality of the City of Naples. It is part of a constellation of self-produced Carnival processions that, from Scampia to the Rione Sanità, characterize the Neapolitan February, finding their purpose in their social and educational value.

Why it's worth it

Visitors coming to Naples for Carnival almost always think of the historic center or the large provincial parades. Miano tells a different story of the Campania region: that of working-class neighborhoods reclaiming the streets for a morning, with schools as a stronghold and celebration as a tool for community building. For a visitor, it is a rare opportunity to see the Neapolitan Carnival in its most authentic and non-touristy form, in an area of the metropolitan city that rarely appears on standard itineraries.

Little Masks Parade — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Little Masks Parade took place on Friday, February 13, with over twenty local schools marching from Villa Russo to the La Birreria Shopping Center. Starting at 9:00 AM, the route followed via Miano and via Lazio, with masked street performers accompanying children, parents, and teachers. Upon arrival, the Urban Park turned into an open-air theater with entertainment, mascots, and traveling shows until 12:30 PM. Participation was free.

Carnival in motion

The title chosen for the 2026 edition — Carnival in motion — perfectly captures the spirit of the day: not a static celebration, but a neighborhood walking together. On Friday, February 13, 2026, the streets of Miano were filled with color, music, and smiles with the return of the Little Masks Parade, a highly anticipated event that unites the district in a large open-air celebration every year.

Over twenty schools responded to the invitation of the Associazione Miano Protagonista: hundreds of masked children, along with parents and teachers, marched from Villa Russo, crossing via Miano and via Lazio to reach the La Birreria Shopping Center. Masked street performers accompanied the procession throughout the route, bringing magic and wonder to the neighborhood streets.

Upon arrival, the festivities continued in the Urban Park, which was transformed for the occasion into an open-air theater with entertainment, mascots, and traveling shows until 12:30 PM. The organizers had also prepared a backup plan: in case of bad weather, the celebration would have simply continued indoors within the structure's interior spaces.
