About San Severino Carnival

Every winter, the center of Mercato San Severino comes alive with confetti, traditional tammorre drums, and elaborate floats. The San Severino Carnival is a grassroots community festival, brought to life by local shopkeepers, associations, and school students. Evening parades, dance troupes, traditional masks, and a competition for the most original costume bring Piazza Dante, Corso Diaz, and Piazza Garibaldi in the province of Salerno to life for several days.

A community festival in the heart of the Irno Valley

Just a few kilometers from Salerno, in the Irno Valley connecting the provincial capital to the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area, the town of Mercato San Severino dedicates some of its most vibrant days to the Carnival. This is not a festival built for mass tourism; it is a community celebration that has grown year after year thanks to local merchants, associations, and schools. In 2025, the event reached its 18th edition, a testament to its established success.

For several days, the town's main streets—Corso Diaz, Piazza Dante, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Ettore Imperio, and Via Roma—transform into a long route of parades, music, and dancing. Floats move slowly through crowds of spectators, followed by dance groups and hundreds of children in costume, filling the historic center with color.

The three souls of the San Severino Carnival

The program, as it has evolved in recent editions, is divided into three distinct events, each involving a different part of the city:

  • The Shopkeepers' Evening — an evening parade with entertainment and music, promoted by local merchants along the axis of Piazza Dante, Piazza Garibaldi, and Corso Diaz. In 2025, it was titled "Maschere e Tammorre" (Masks and Tammorre), highlighting its deep connection to the musical traditions of Campania.
  • The Sunday of Floats — the most anticipated moment: the parade of allegorical floats and dance groups, organized by the Il Gabbiano association, which travels through Via Solofrana, Via Trieste, Via Roma, and ends in Piazza Cesare Battisti and Piazza Ettore Imperio.
  • The Tuesday of Schools — the "Noi e le scuole" (Us and the Schools) morning event, featuring students from the local primary and middle schools in a parade dedicated to traditional masks, moving from Piazza Califano along Via Rimembranza, Corso Diaz, and Piazza Garibaldi to Piazza Dante.

Masks, tammorre, and the spirit of Campania

Carnival in Campania is not just about parades; it is about sound. The tammorra, the frame drum that accompanies the region's traditional tammurriata dances, returns to the squares alongside traditional Neapolitan masks. This blend of rural ritual and urban festivity coexists in Mercato San Severino with the modern choreography of dance groups. It is this dual nature—popular and contemporary—that gives the event its unique character within the landscape of the Salerno province.

The award for the most original mask

One of the hallmarks of the event is the award for the most original mask, which celebrates the creativity of participants and encourages families, groups, and associations to spend weeks crafting their costumes. This detail perfectly captures the nature of the event: here, the public does not just watch; they participate.

A city-led initiative

Coordination is managed by the Municipal Administration—in 2025, the project was overseen by councilor Rosa Ascolese—working in tandem with merchants, associations, and schools. Mayor Antonio Somma has frequently cited this widespread participation as an example of active citizenship: in short, the Carnival is a moment when the community of San Severino recognizes itself and shines.

Mercato San Severino and its territory

With over twenty thousand inhabitants, Mercato San Severino is one of the most populous centers in the Irno Valley, in Campania. The town is dominated by the ruins of the Sanseverino Castle, one of the largest medieval fortified complexes in Southern Italy, and maintains a network of hamlets and villages—such as Pandola, Costa, and Ciorani—that host a busy calendar of patronal feasts and food festivals throughout the year. The Carnival represents the premier winter event, reopening the town squares after the coldest months.
