The Nativity comes to life in the Capuchin cloister, amidst ancient crafts and Melilli traditions
The Melilli Living Nativity, set up in the cloister of the Capuchin Friars Minor Convent, is much more than a Christmas performance: it is a symbol of rebirth for the entire community. Its history began in December 1990, just days after the earthquake that struck the Syracuse area on December 13th. The population was camped out in the sports field and, as Friar Angelo Catalano recalls, it was the Franciscan Youth who created the first living nativity "without any help, using only what we had." Since then, the performance has never stopped, becoming a defining event for Melilli, a small town in the province of Syracuse, Sicily.
For a few days, the garden and the 18th-century cloister of the convent are transformed into a village from the Palestine of two thousand years ago. About 150 actors in period costumes recreate the arts, crafts, and customs of Jesus' time, creating an evocative journey that seems to stop time. Visitors walk through scenes of daily life, workshops, and settings that culminate in the Nativity scene.
One of the unique features of the Melilli nativity is the blend of the Gospel story with local traditions. Among the scenes, you will find:
The performance retains a strong Franciscan character, linked to the mystery of the Incarnation and the spirit of simplicity of the Capuchins. In recent years, the nativity has become part of the broader Christmas City program in Melilli, which enlivens the town with Christmas villages and other living nativities throughout the area. However, the Capuchin Living Nativity remains the beating heart of Christmas in Melilli, attracting visitors from across the province of Syracuse and eastern Sicily.
Admission to the nativity is free, the result of the volunteer work of the parish community and the many actors who participate every year. It is an experience suitable for families and anyone wishing to experience Christmas in an authentic way, immersed in the atmosphere of the past and the traditions of Melilli, in the province of Syracuse.
The 36th edition of the Melilli Living Nativity confirmed the community's strong bond with this tradition, which began in 1990. The opening was held on Friday, December 26, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the cloister of the Capuchin Friars Minor Convent, with further visiting days on December 28, and January 1, 4, and 6.
Once again this year, the route featured about 150 costumed actors, busy recreating traditional arts and trades: the Melilli coat of arms with bees and honey tasting, the stonemasons of the baroque quarries, the water mill, and artisan workshops. The event was part of the Christmas City program in Melilli, in the province of Syracuse, with free admission.
