The patronal feast of Carlentini, blending faith, tradition, and August festivities
The Saint Lucy Festival is the most important event of the year for Carlentini, a town in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Every summer, around the fourth Sunday of August, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together faith, history, and spectacle. The festival is more than just a religious rite: it is the very identity of a town that, for a few days, fills up with returning emigrants, visitors, and devotees.
Saint Lucy has been the patron saint of Carlentini since May 15, 1621. Tradition holds that the young martyr from Syracuse, during a pilgrimage to Catania, passed through the Meta hill where the town now stands. For over four centuries, the people of Carlentini have renewed this bond with one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in the Leontinoi area. The celebrations involve several local churches, including the Mother Church, the church of Santa Maria di Roccadia, and the parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Saint Anne.
The festivities take place over a weekend, from Saturday to Monday, preceded by a three-day preparation period. Among the most intense moments are:
Alongside the liturgical program, the festival has always offered a rich calendar of secular events: concerts in Piazza A. Diaz featuring nationally renowned artists, photography exhibitions, craft markets, and cultural initiatives that promote the area. This is the dual soul of the Saint Lucy Festival, capable of combining the solemnity of tradition with the energy of a great popular summer celebration.
The festival falls on the fourth Sunday of August, in the height of summer, which is the ideal time to discover Carlentini and the Iblei Mountains area. The dates for the 2026 edition are expected around August 23, 2026, while the detailed program of festivities is traditionally published in the weeks leading up to the event.
The 2026 Saint Lucy Festival in Carlentini is scheduled around the fourth Sunday of August, with the main date marked for August 23, 2026, and festivities extending approximately from August 22 to 25.
The traditional structure includes the preparatory triduum, the homage to the relic on the eve, the procession of the statue on the Sunday of the feast, and the solemn pontifical mass on Monday, closing with fireworks. Alongside the religious program, concerts and cultural events are expected in Piazza A. Diaz, as in previous years.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: it will be announced by the Deputation of Saint Lucy and the Municipality of Carlentini in the weeks preceding the festival.
Carlentini is located in the province of Syracuse, along the SS114 road. By car, it can be reached via the A18/A19 motorway and the SS114 Syracuse-Catania road, taking the Carlentini-Lentini exit. The reference railway station is Lentini, on the Catania-Syracuse line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 40 km away.
The patronal feast and the events in the square are free and open to everyone.
During the festival days, the historic center is very crowded, especially during the processions and evening concerts in Piazza A. Diaz. It is advisable to arrive early and check the Municipality of Carlentini website for the updated program.
