About Saint Lucy Carlentini

Every year, on the fourth Sunday of August, Carlentini comes to a standstill for its patron saint: the Saint Lucy Festival. Three days of solemn processions, masses, fireworks, and open-air concerts animate the historic center of this town in the province of Syracuse. A tradition dating back to 1621, when Saint Lucy was proclaimed the city's protector, it continues to unite religious devotion, local identity, and popular celebration. It is a deeply felt event for the people of Carlentini and those returning home for the summer.

The patronal feast of Carlentini

The Saint Lucy Festival is the most important event of the year for Carlentini, a town in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Every summer, around the fourth Sunday of August, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together faith, history, and spectacle. The festival is more than just a religious rite: it is the very identity of a town that, for a few days, fills up with returning emigrants, visitors, and devotees.

A devotion dating back to 1621

Saint Lucy has been the patron saint of Carlentini since May 15, 1621. Tradition holds that the young martyr from Syracuse, during a pilgrimage to Catania, passed through the Meta hill where the town now stands. For over four centuries, the people of Carlentini have renewed this bond with one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in the Leontinoi area. The celebrations involve several local churches, including the Mother Church, the church of Santa Maria di Roccadia, and the parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Saint Anne.

Three days of celebrations

The festivities take place over a weekend, from Saturday to Monday, preceded by a three-day preparation period. Among the most intense moments are:

  • The homage to the relic, on the eve of the feast, with mass and the penitential procession of the silver reliquary arm containing a bone fragment of the Saint;
  • The Sunday of the feast, with the solemn morning celebration and the procession of the statue through the city districts;
  • The final Monday, with the solemn pontifical mass in the Mother Church, the evening procession of the statue, and the traditional fireworks that light up the sky over Carlentini.

Beyond religion: music and culture

Alongside the liturgical program, the festival has always offered a rich calendar of secular events: concerts in Piazza A. Diaz featuring nationally renowned artists, photography exhibitions, craft markets, and cultural initiatives that promote the area. This is the dual soul of the Saint Lucy Festival, capable of combining the solemnity of tradition with the energy of a great popular summer celebration.
