The eve of the Assumption in Varoni di Montesarchio, featuring fried eggplant, Sannio wines, and folk music

The Melanzane al Cassone Festival โ also known locally as the Sagra della Melanzana nel Cassone โ takes place in Varoni, a district of the municipality of Montesarchio, in the province of Benevento, within the Campanian Sannio region. This is not a large-scale regional event; it is a grassroots village feast that, every mid-August, transforms the streets and small squares of the hamlet into one long open-air dining table. It is this intimate, family-like atmosphere that makes it one of the most authentic highlights of the gastronomic summer in the Valle Caudina, the valley that descends from the Taburno mountains toward the border with Irpinia.
The festival traditionally falls on August 14th, the eve of the Assumption, with food stalls opening in the early evening once the day's heat has subsided. Local families do the cooking, serving, and storytelling: there are no professional kitchens here, just home recipes multiplied into hundreds of portions.
The dish that gives the festival its name is a popular specialty of inland Campania: the eggplant is sliced open, stuffed, breaded, and fried. The filling varies from family to family โ stale bread, cheese, eggs, cured meats, aromatic herbs โ but the result is always the same: a parcel that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, meant to be eaten hot, while standing, with a glass of wine in hand.
It is a recipe born from the "cucina povera" tradition, designed to make the most of the most abundant vegetable in August gardens and to create a hearty, meatless dish. Over the years, the stalls have expanded their offerings to include other local traditional dishes, homemade desserts, and regional wines, starting with the Sannio Falanghina.
Organizers trace the first edition back to 1979, when the festival committee decided to add an evening dedicated to the eggplant to the existing religious celebrations. Since then, the festival has taken place almost every year: the 2024 edition was presented as the forty-fifth, and the 2025 edition as the forty-sixth. Such continuity is rare for an event managed entirely by volunteers from a single village, who today form the committee that also oversees the patronal feast.
The festival is not an isolated event but the culinary centerpiece of the festivities in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which occupy about ten days in August in Varoni. The religious program includes a novena of preparation, daily masses, and the solemn procession on August 15th through the streets of the village, with the statue of the Virgin carried on shoulders and fireworks upon its return to the church.
The secular calendar is rounded out by musical evenings, shows, and children's entertainment: in past years, Varoni has hosted Neapolitan and neo-melodic singers as well as 90s dance revivals, culminating in a final concert and fireworks display. Devotion to the Assumption in this church has been documented since the 18th century, and before 1950, the eve was dedicated to the procession of the ยซMadonna Mortaยป (Dead Madonna): a detail that explains why August 14th remains such a deeply felt date, even in its secular and gastronomic form.
Visitors arriving for the festival will find one of the most interesting villages in the Sannio region just minutes away. Montesarchio โ the ancient Caudium of the Samnites โ is dominated by its Tower and Castle, which house the National Archaeological Museum of the Sannio Caudino, home to a famous collection of ancient vases, including the Assteas Krater. Surrounding the area are the Taburno-Camposauro Regional Park and the Sannio wine route, one of the largest DOC areas in Campania.
As of the writing of this page, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Melanzane al Cassone Festival in Varoni di Montesarchio (province of Benevento, Campania). Portals tracking the event still list the 2025 edition with the note "date update in progress".
The historical reference remains August 14th, the eve of the Assumption: it is on that evening that the village has set up the festival stalls since 1979, following the novena and preceding the solemn procession on August 15th. As soon as the committee publishes the calendar, we will update this page with dates, times, and a detailed program.
