Books, the sea, and dialogue between Mediterranean cultures in the village of Aspra
The Mediterranean Book Festival was born in the heart of Aspra, an ancient seaside village and district of the Municipality of Bagheria, in the Province of Palermo (Sicily). The event takes place on the picturesque seaside terrace of Piazza Crocicchia, one of the town's most beloved viewpoints, where the scent of the sea breeze accompanies book launches and author meet-and-greets.
The event is conceived and directed by local veterinarian and cultural promoter Gino Gagliano, and is promoted by the Pro Loco Bagheria Genius Loci in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Aspra, under the patronage of the Municipality of Bagheria. Designed as a space for encounter and dialogue between the cultures, languages, and shores of the Mediterranean, the festival turns books into instruments of knowledge, memory, and connection between peoples.
For an entire weekend, from late afternoon until evening, the program features book presentations, author meetings, debates, poetry readings, exhibitions, live painting sessions, and musical interludes. The main themes running through the program are archaeology, history, theater, and the dialogue between different Mediterranean cultures, with a constant focus on the relationship between humanity, the territory, and the sea.
The Mediterranean Book Festival is also a major local networking project: it involves numerous cultural and environmental associations from the Bagheria area and neighboring municipalities (Aspra, Bagheria, Ficarazzi, Santa Flavia, Altavilla Milicia). Various environmental groups organize seabed cleaning activities in Aspra, open to volunteers, highlighting the close bond between the culture of books and the care of the Sicilian coastal landscape.
Hosting the festival in Aspra means celebrating a village with a strong maritime identity, famous for its fishing traditions and the light that inspired artists like Renato Guttuso, a native of Bagheria. The setting of Piazza Crocicchia, with its terrace overlooking the Gulf, makes every presentation an experience that unites the written word with the landscape in one of the most characteristic locations on the Palermo coast.
The second edition of the Mediterranean Book Festival was held in Aspra, a district of Bagheria (PA), from Friday, May 22 to Sunday, May 24, 2026, on the seaside terrace of Piazza Crocicchia. The event, promoted by the Pro Loco Bagheria Genius Loci and the Pro Loco of Aspra, and conceived by Gino Gagliano with the patronage of the Municipality of Bagheria, offered three days of meetings from the afternoon until the evening.
The main themes of the 2026 edition were archaeology, history, and theater, alongside exchanges between different Mediterranean cultures. The program alternated between book presentations, debates, live painting, and musical performances. The edition involved twenty-one associations, including five Pro Loco (Aspra, Bagheria, Ficarazzi, Santa Flavia, and Altavilla), while six environmental associations organized the cleaning of Aspra's seabed, with Sunday morning open to volunteers.

By train: Bagheria station on the Palermo–Messina line, then local connections to Aspra. By car: from the A19 Palermo–Catania motorway, take the Bagheria exit, then follow signs for Aspra. By plane: Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport, approximately 45 km away.
Free admission to all festival events.
The meetings take place mainly in the evening: we recommend comfortable clothing and a light jacket for windy evenings, given the seaside location. Full program and updates are available on the website laretemediterranea.it.
