The historic center of Mesagne returns to its Frederick II roots with pageants, duels, and jesters

The Fiera Medievale Franca is one of the most anticipated historical re-enactments in the province of Brindisi. Every year, on September evenings, the historic center of Mesagne transforms into a medieval village evoking the era of Frederick II of Swabia, the Stupor Mundi. Alleys, squares, and the Norman-Swabian Castle become the stage for a city stepping back eight centuries, with costumed performers, ancient sounds, and the colors of historical group flags.
The program brings the village streets to life with historical processions, drums, and wandering musicians, while sword duels and historical archery competitions take place on the Castle lawn. There are also encampments reconstructing daily life from the period, alongside performances by falconers, jesters, stilt walkers, jugglers, and evocative medieval dances. Artists and delegations from historical groups from various Italian cities parade through the center with shows, processions, and duels, offering an experience designed for the whole family.
Along the route, you will find an artisan market featuring period products, local food, and regional specialties. A highly anticipated moment is the Medieval Dinner, the Taverna dei Cavalieri, set up in one of the village squares with banquets, ancient music, and entertainment. The evenings conclude with a fire show, amidst lights and atmospheres that accompany the public until late at night.
The event is organized by the Gruppo Storico Cittร di Mesagne and Meghy Costumes d'รpoque, with the patronage of the Municipality of Mesagne, the Puglia Region, and UNPLI โ Pro Loco Puglia, in collaboration with the provincial Confesercenti of Brindisi. The Fiera Medievale Franca is among the nationally recognized historical re-enactments, and in recent years, sixteen municipalities have signed a protocol for the cultural and tourist enhancement of the territory, confirming its role in promoting the Messapian Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Fiera Medievale Franca in Mesagne is expected in September, in continuity with previous editions. As of today, the organizers have not yet communicated the official dates or the program of the event.
As per tradition, the Fair is expected to bring back to the historic center and the Norman-Swabian Castle historical processions, sword duels, archery, falconry, jesters, and medieval dances, along with the artisan market and evening shows. Definitive information will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
