The Middle Ages come to life in the Iblean village of Buccheri
The MedFest - Buccheri Medieval Festival is the flagship event of the small town of Buccheri, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants nestled in the Iblean Mountains, in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. For three days in midsummer, the historic center dresses up and becomes an authentic medieval village: 15th-century period costume processions, craft markets, taverns, roving performances, and early music turn the squares and alleys into open-air stages.
Established in the late 1990s, MedFest has spanned nearly thirty years of history, becoming a highly anticipated event for the entire south-eastern Sicily. Although rebuilt in Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake, Buccheri has preserved the layout of its medieval origins, with the Castello District and its staircases serving as a natural backdrop for the re-enactment. In 2011, the Buccheri Drummers organized the first medieval drum festival in Sicily, which is now held alongside MedFest as its opening night.
The Castello District, Piazza Roma, Piazza Toselli, and other areas of the village light up with torches, music, and scents, offering a journey through time that captivates both adults and children. The event, organized by the municipal administration of Buccheri with the support of local associations, offers free admission and is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Iblean Mountains.
The 2026 MedFest in Buccheri, now in its 29th edition, will be held from Friday, August 21 to Sunday, August 23, 2026. As per tradition, the event will open with the Medieval Drum Festival and continue with the costumed historical pageant, street performances, the medieval market, and taverns scattered throughout the historic center of the Iblean village, in the province of Syracuse.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times, locations, and participating groups, has not yet been published: the organizers will release it in the weeks leading up to the event. Admission is free.
Buccheri can be reached by car via the SS124 and the provincial roads connecting the Iblean plateau; the nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (about 80 km) and Comiso. The reference train station is Vizzini-Licodia or Syracuse, with a final leg by car.
Admission to the event is free. Shows mainly take place in the late afternoon and evening, from the opening procession until late at night. The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Comfortable clothing is recommended for navigating the alleys and staircases of the historic center. As Buccheri is a small village, it is advisable to book accommodation in the farmhouses and local facilities of the Iblean area well in advance.
