About May Fair

The May Fair is the most anticipated event of spring in San Polo d'Enza, in the Province of Reggio Emilia. For three days, the historic center comes alive with the traditional parade of tractors from the Val d'Enza, craft and antique markets, food stalls, concerts, dancing evenings, and a funfair. A free-entry popular festival celebrating the agricultural roots and community of the town.

The spring festival of San Polo d'Enza

The May Fair is the event that opens the warm season every year in San Polo d'Enza, a municipality in the Province of Reggio Emilia overlooking the Enza river, at the foot of the first hills of Emilia-Romagna. For three days, from May 1st to the following Sunday, the squares and streets of the center transform into a large festive space that attracts residents and visitors from all over the Val d'Enza.

A tradition linked to the land

The heart of the fair is the traditional tractor parade, a symbol of the agricultural soul of this corner of the Reggiana plain. Both historic and modern vehicles parade through the town accompanied by the notes of the band, in a procession that is both a re-enactment and a peasant festival. Alongside the parade, there is an exhibition of agricultural machinery in the municipal gardens and a visit to the municipal vinegar factory, dedicated to Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, a prime product of the area.

Markets, crafts, and antiques

During the fair, the center fills with stalls and stands: the creative craft market, the antique and upcycling market exhibition, and the usual extraordinary market of itinerant vendors animate Piazza Matteotti and the surrounding streets. There are also vintage car exhibitions and artistic-cultural exhibitions set up in the historic spaces of the town, such as the Clock Tower.

Music, food, and fun

The evenings are dedicated to music and dancing, with dancing evenings accompanied by an orchestra, rock concerts, and acoustic performances that liven up the squares until late at night. Throughout the event, the food stalls remain open, offering the flavors of Emilian cuisine, and the funfair dedicated to children. The May Fair thus remains an intergenerational festival, capable of uniting rural tradition, conviviality, and entertainment in a free-entry event in the heart of the San Polo community.
