The traditional fair on the last Sunday of September in Rubiera
The September Fair is one of the two major annual fairs in Rubiera, a municipality in the Province of Reggio Emilia in Emilia-Romagna, located along the historic Via Emilia between Reggio and Modena. It is traditionally held on the last Sunday of September and is an event eagerly awaited by the entire community: the summer cousin, the June Fair, opens the good season, while the September one closes it in grand style.
The heart of the event is the large extraordinary market, with 58 stalls distributed along Via Emilia Ovest, Piazza XXIV Maggio, and Piazza Gramsci, from 8 am to 6 pm. Among the stalls, you'll find clothing, jewelry, and accessories, household items, sweets, and toys, alongside a creative craft market and food trucks with specialties from all over Italy. It's an opportunity to stroll through the historic center, shop, and taste street food in a festive atmosphere.
For children and families, the most anticipated moment is the Luna Park, set up in Piazza del Popolo and along Viale Aldo Moro with about ten attractions including rides and games. The lights of the Luna Park stay on well beyond Sunday: the festival actually starts on the preceding Thursday and continues until the following Tuesday, for a total of six days of fun.
In addition to commerce and rides, the September Fair is above all a great moment of village life: music and entertainment accompany the day, while associations, the parish, and local organizations offer exhibitions, initiatives, and convivial moments. Over the years, the fair has hosted concerts, local art exhibitions, workshops, and parties organized by Rubiera associations, confirming itself as one of the identity events of the city's calendar.
Village fairs like the one in Rubiera have their roots in the ancient markets and seasonal celebrations of the lower Emilia plain, when the end of summer marked the time for commercial exchanges and community festivals. Even today, the September Fair keeps this spirit alive, merging the commercial dimension of the market with the popular and festive one that makes it a beloved event for the entire Province of Reggio Emilia.
The Rubiera September Fair 2026 takes place on the weekend of the last Sunday of the month, Sunday, September 27, with the Luna Park open from Thursday, September 24 to Tuesday, September 29 in Piazza del Popolo and Viale Aldo Moro.
