The tradition of the Fujenti and Battenti on Easter Monday in Grazzanise
The Maria SS. dell'Arco Festival is one of the most iconic religious and folk events in Grazzanise, a town in the Province of Caserta, Campania. At the heart of the celebration is the cult of the Madonna dell'Arco, whose image is venerated in the sanctuary of the same name in Sant'Anastasia, near Naples, a destination for hundreds of groups of devotees from across the region every year. In Grazzanise, this devotion is expressed through the historic teams of Fujenti (also known as Battenti), who run through the town streets on Easter Monday carrying flags and banners.
The term battenti refers to an ancient penitential practice documented as far back as the 17th century, when confraternities would advance toward the sanctuary as an act of penance. In Grazzanise, the tradition has taken on a more sober and communal character over time: the teams, organized by district and with specific roles (lead-battente, flag-bearer, seal-bearer), bring together adults, youth, and children in a rite that weaves faith, neighborhood belonging, and an almost athletic fervor. Each group makes a vow to reach the sanctuary on foot, carrying banners bearing the association's name and the year of its founding.
On the morning of the main day, the various teams set off from their gathering points and parade through the center:
The welcome is marked by the sound of firecrackers, fireworks, and brass band music, while the Holy Mass attended by the Fujenti brings the entire community together at the Church of the Madonna dell'Arco.
The highlight of the festival is the solemn procession with the Carro degli Angeli (Chariot of the Angels), also known as the Verginelle, sponsored by the Municipality of Grazzanise. The chariot parades through the main streets accompanied by the faithful and the teams, leading up to the final Eucharistic celebration. It is the most visible sign of how the festival unites the penitential dimension with the choral and festive spirit of the entire town.
Alongside the religious rites, the Maria SS. dell'Arco Festival Committee organizes a rich civil program: the lighting of artistic illuminations, cabaret shows, pop and neomelodic music concerts, orchestras, and evening entertainment, culminating in grand nighttime fireworks. This calendar, spanning from the unveiling of the banner in late March to the final procession, transforms Grazzanise into a focal point for devotees and visitors in the Caserta area.
Attending the Maria SS. dell'Arco Festival means experiencing one of the most authentic expressions of Campanian folk religiosity up close: an intangible heritage made of runs, banners, vows, and community, where the tradition of the Fujenti is renewed from generation to generation. Admission to all events is free.
The 2026 edition, with free admission, was spread over several days between late March and Easter, combining popular devotion and entertainment in the town of Grazzanise, in the Province of Caserta.
Grazzanise is located in the Province of Caserta, Campania, on the lower Volturno plain. By car, it can be reached from the A1 motorway exit (Capua or Santa Maria Capua Vetere) by continuing along the SS7 Appia and provincial roads. The reference railway station is Santa Maria Capua Vetere, connected to Naples and Caserta, from which you can continue by bus or car.
All religious and civil events are free of charge.
The committee invites participants to maintain proper behavior and appropriate attire during the rites. It is recommended to arrive early on the days of the Fujenti and the procession, when the town center is particularly crowded.
