Two evenings of Sannio flavors in Pago Veiano, in the heart of the Benevento region
The Marchigiana Breed Veal Festival is one of the most deeply rooted food and wine events of the Sannio summer. It takes place in Pago Veiano, an agricultural village in the province of Benevento, in Campania, and was born from a very concrete need: to give visibility to the local Marchigiana breed veal raised on farms within the municipal area. This meat is considered one of the jewels of Italian livestock farming for its organoleptic qualities, and the festival tells its story in the most direct way possible: by bringing it to the table.
The heart of the event is the stall area, set up in the town center and open in the evening. The dishes follow the recipes of Sannio peasant cuisine, without gourmet reinterpretations: hearty meals, slow cooking, and simple seasonings. The festival's historic menu includes:
The tastings are accompanied by artisanal specialties and local products that reflect the agricultural culture of the Benevento countryside, an area where livestock farming and cereal cultivation have coexisted for generations.
Beyond the food, the program includes musical entertainment, social spaces, and initiatives dedicated to promoting the region. In past editions, the festival has also hosted meetings and public discussions on promoting local produce, a sign of an event that goes beyond a simple village fair to serve as a showcase for local farmers and producers. For two nights, Pago Veiano becomes a meeting point for visitors arriving from all over Campania and neighboring regions.
The festival has surpassed eighteen editions: the fifteenth was held in 2019, the eighteenth in 2025, and the nineteenth in July 2026, always during the middle or final weekend of the month. The organization is entrusted to Pro Loco Pago Veiano, led by president Arcangelo Mercuri, working in collaboration with the Municipal Administration: for the 2026 edition, the Municipality granted its patronage and a contribution. The slogan chosen in 2026, «Culture – Taste – Traditions», perfectly summarizes the event's identity.
Pago Veiano is located in the hilly hinterland northeast of Benevento, in an area where summer festivals mark the social calendar of the towns and often represent the peak of annual attendance. Visitors from outside the region will find an authentic version of the Italian festival here: volunteer-run, affordable prices, outdoor communal tables, and a signature product at the center of it all. It is also a great opportunity to discover a less-traveled part of Campania, a short distance from Pietrelcina and the hills of the Sannio wine region, home to the Aglianico and Falanghina wines that pair perfectly with the festival's meat dishes.
Those looking for the Campania of major coastal destinations will not find postcard-perfect scenery in Pago Veiano, but something rarer: a community of a few thousand inhabitants organizing itself to share its work through food. The Marchigiana Breed Veal Festival is a family-friendly event with free admission, where food is purchased directly at the stalls, and it is one of the best opportunities to taste Marchigiana breed meat right where it is raised.
The 2026 edition of the Marchigiana Breed Veal Festival took place in Pago Veiano (province of Benevento) over the weekend of July 25 and 26, confirming its traditional placement in the second half of the month. The slogan chosen by the organizers, «Culture – Taste – Traditions», guided a two-day event built around a tasting journey dedicated to the local Marchigiana breed veal, considered one of the finest examples of Italian livestock farming for its organoleptic qualities.
During the two evenings, the stalls offered the event's historic dishes — rigatoni with veal ragù, peasant-style veal strips, country-style stew, roasted veal — paired with local wines and other specialties of Sannio rural cuisine. Alongside the food area, the program included musical entertainment, moments of conviviality, and initiatives dedicated to promoting local produce and Benevento farmers.
The event is promoted by Pro Loco Pago Veiano, chaired by Arcangelo Mercuri, in collaboration with the Municipal Administration, which approved patronage and financial support for the initiative in 2026.
Opening of the food area in the evening (from 8:00 PM) with the tasting journey dedicated to the local Marchigiana breed veal; followed by musical entertainment in the town center.
Second evening of tastings with the same traditional Sannio rural menu, accompanied by music and initiatives promoting local agricultural and livestock products.
The organizers did not release the names of the artists or the exact times of individual performances to the press.
By car: Pago Veiano is located in the Benevento hinterland, about twenty kilometers northeast of Benevento; the most convenient route starts from the provincial capital and crosses the Sannio hills. On festival evenings, traffic in the town center is heavy: it is best to arrive early and park in the areas on the outskirts of the village.
By train: the reference station is Benevento, connected to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia; from there, you must continue by car or local bus, which are infrequent in the evenings and on weekends.
By plane: the nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, just over an hour's drive away.
Admission to the event is free. The food stalls open in the evening (in previous editions from 8:00 PM) and tastings are paid for directly at the distribution points. For updated hours and the current year's menu, it is advisable to check the Pro Loco Pago Veiano channels.
