The Christmas festival in the Norman village of Cefalù
Magico Natale in Cefalù is the Christmas festival that, every year from December 6th to January 6th, lights up the historic center of Cefalù—a jewel of the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily—with events and festivities. Promoted by the municipal administration with the support of the Pro Loco Cefalù APS, the Diocese of Cefalù, and numerous local cultural and musical associations, the festival offers over sixty events, all free of charge, designed for residents, families, and tourists alike.
The program is spread across the city's most evocative locations: the spectacular Piazza Duomo, dominated by the UNESCO-listed Norman cathedral, hosts major evening concerts and the New Year's Eve party; the Teatro Comunale Cicero welcomes theatrical performances, classical music, jazz, and gospel concerts; Largo Di Giorgio serves as a backdrop for parades and processions, while the Corte delle Stelle, along Corso Ruggero, is transformed into Santa's House to the delight of the little ones.
The heart of the festival lies in its popular traditions. The Ninnaredda, an ancient itinerant Christmas carol, echoes through the alleys in the days leading up to Christmas and is performed again in Piazza Duomo after the Midnight Mass on December 24th. The Via dei Presepi (Nativity Scene Trail) and the Diocesan Nativity Scene Exhibition, set up in the San Domenico complex and various churches in the center, tell the story of the Nativity through the works of local master craftsmen and remain open until Epiphany.
The calendar alternates between children's shows, creative workshops, gospel concerts, puppet theater, and parades featuring stilt walkers and mini-bands. There is no shortage of family-friendly activities, including Santa's House, Christmas cookie workshops, and theater performances dedicated to younger audiences.
On the night of December 31st, Piazza Duomo turns into a massive open-air dance floor with live concerts and DJ sets, leading up to the collective midnight toast. The festival concludes on January 6th with "Waiting for the Three Kings," the traditional Epiphany horse parade. Experiencing Magico Natale means discovering Cefalù in its most intimate and festive guise, amidst history, faith, and conviviality.
The 2025-2026 edition kicked off on December 6th with the inauguration of Santa's House at the Corte delle Stelle, the "A Child Has Been Given to Us" exhibition at the Ottagono di Santa Caterina, the Christmas parade with the "Città di Cefalù" mini-band, and the "Talent Showcase" show at the Teatro Cicero. On December 8th, the Nativity Scene Trail was inaugurated along with the Diocesan Exhibition at the SS. Trinità church.
The Teatro Comunale Cicero hosted a packed calendar of shows, including Libero Reina in "Gafludi" (December 7th), Sergio Vespertino (December 12th), and gospel concerts by "Voci di Gioia" (December 16th) and the Baltimora Gospel Singers (December 29th). In Piazza Duomo, performances included I Gemelli di Guidonia (December 27th) and the La Giovane Orchestra Sicula in the concert "When Classical Meets Gospel" (December 28th).
Among the traditions, the Ninnaredda brought the alleys to life on the evenings of December 7th, 16-21, and 23rd, culminating in Piazza Duomo after the Midnight Mass on the 24th. On the night of December 31st, Piazza Duomo turned into an open-air disco with the group I Barracuda and a DJ set by Big Reunion. The festival concluded on January 6th with "Waiting for the Three Kings."
Cefalù can be reached by train via the Palermo-Messina line (Cefalù station, just a few minutes' walk from the historic center) or by car via the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway, taking the Cefalù exit. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi, about an hour away.
All festival events are free of charge.
The historic center has restricted traffic and is largely pedestrianized: we recommend leaving your car in the external parking lots and exploring the alleys, churches, and squares on foot.
