The patron saint festival for fishermen and the "Ciauru di Mari" Fish Festival in Balestrate
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, around June 29th, Balestrate — a small seaside town overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare in the province of Palermo — gathers around its patron saint for the Saint Peter and the Sea Festival. It is one of the most cherished traditions on the Palermo coast, as Saint Peter is not only the titular saint of the local church but also the protector of fishermen, and here, fishing has always been the heart of the local identity. The festival thus weaves together religious devotion, maritime culture, and a grand gastronomic fair.
The most anticipated moment is the procession. After the Holy Mass at the Church of Saint Peter, the statue of the saint is placed on a festive float designed to resemble a boat. It is pulled through the town streets and down to the harbor by fishermen wearing traditional costumes: blue trousers and blue-and-white horizontal striped shirts. The procession reaches the quay, where the saint is honored by the maritime community before the evening show.
Alongside the religious observances, the festival is famous for its Fish Festival, known by the local dialect name "Ciauru di Mari" — literally the "scent of the sea" that fills the streets when sardines are fried. Along the town center streets, from the viewpoint area to Via Madonna del Ponte, a gastronomic trail unfolds with tastings of fried fish and sardine-based dishes, prepared by local restaurateurs using extra virgin olive oil and paired with local wines. Stalls, aromas, and music transform Balestrate into a grand street party.
The evenings are enlivened by musical performances, cabaret, and DJ sets in the town squares, while the grand finale is marked by fireworks launched from the sea, reflecting over the long golden beach of the Gulf of Castellammare. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Balestrate APS with the patronage of the Municipality and the Regional Tourism Department, also signals that the beach season has officially begun.
For those visiting western Sicily in late June, the Saint Peter and the Sea Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the authenticity of a fishing village, amidst popular faith, maritime traditions, and simple, genuine seafood cuisine. Balestrate, with its beaches and harbor, welcomes residents and tourists in a festive atmosphere that blends the sacred and the profane.
At the moment, the Pro Loco Balestrate APS and the Municipality have not yet published the official calendar for the 2026 edition of the Saint Peter and the Sea Festival. Based on previous editions, the event is expected around June 29th, with Holy Mass and the procession of the Saint Peter statue to the harbor, the "Ciauru di Mari" Fish Festival along the town center streets, and the evening fireworks display. The detailed program will be updated as soon as it is made public by the organizers.
Balestrate is located along the coast of the Gulf of Castellammare, in the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo–Mazara del Vallo motorway (Balestrate exit). By train, the Balestrate station is served by the Palermo–Trapani line. The nearest airport is Palermo "Falcone-Borsellino" (Punta Raisi), about 30 km away.
The festival traditionally takes place on the last weekend of June, around June 29th, the feast day of Saint Peter.
The religious festival, the procession, and the square performances are free. Tastings at the Fish Festival are available for purchase at the food stands.
Space is limited near the harbor during the procession and fireworks, so it is advisable to arrive early. Balestrate offers equipped beaches and accommodation facilities for those wishing to extend their stay.
