The patronal festival of Castellammare del Golfo, featuring a sea procession and deep-rooted popular devotion
The Feast of Maria SS. del Soccorso is the main religious celebration in Castellammare del Golfo, a seaside town in the province of Trapani overlooking the gulf of the same name in northwestern Sicily. Every year, from August 19th to 21st, the entire community gathers around its patron saint for three days of devotion, popular rituals, and festivities that attract believers, returning emigrants, and visitors from across the island.
The festival is rooted in a legendary event from July 13, 1718, during the conflicts between Spain and Savoy for control of Sicily. According to tradition, a Spanish ship fleeing from a squadron of English ships sought refuge under the castle of Castellammare. As the English bombardment spread terror, the population invoked their patron saint: it is said that the Madonna appeared on Mount Scale dressed in white, followed by a host of angelsโa vision that caused the English to flee. Despite the enemy fire, no inhabitants were harmed. This event sparked a devotion that has lasted for over three centuries; in 1798, Pope Pius VI officially crowned the Madonna del Soccorso.
The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the sea procession, which opens the festivities. After the liturgical celebration, the statue of the Virgin is carried on the shoulders of sailors from the coastal district through the narrow streets of the old town to the Cala Marina. Here, the statue is hoisted onto a decorated boat and accompanied by sea by dozens of boats belonging to the faithful and fishermen, along a route lit by thousands of candles. In the background, pyrotechnic fountains, stationary fireworks, and light displays reflected on the water create a unique atmosphere.
During the festivities, the historical re-enactment of the "Nostra Principalissima Patrona" takes placeโa sacred performance staged at the Cala Marina with narrators, choirs, music, pyrotechnic effects, and the scenic appearance of the Madonna's image over the sea. On August 21st, the land procession takes place: the statue leaves the Mother Church and travels through the main streets of the center, while the faithful recite and sing the Rosary in the local Castellammarese dialect, in one of the city's most defining traditions. The return to the Mother Church concludes the three days of celebration.
Alongside the religious rites, the days are animated by fairs, stalls, and food stands in the town squares, featuring sweets and traditional products from the Trapani area. The Feast of Maria SS. del Soccorso is a cornerstone of identity for the Municipality of Castellammare del Golfo and for all of western Sicily, weaving together faith, maritime culture, and popular folklore in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the region.

The complete official program, including the times of religious services and shows, will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
