The festival of ancient Sicilian grains in Militello Rosmarino
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Frumentu — Ancient Grains Festival is the food, wine, and cultural event that brings Militello Rosmarino to life every year in late September. Located in the Nebrodi mountains in the Province of Messina, Sicily, the event was created to promote ancient Sicilian grains—those wheat varieties that for centuries made the island the famous "granary of the Mediterranean" and which, after a long period of neglect, have returned to play a leading role in local agriculture.
The heart of the festival is the rediscovery of ancient grain varieties and their history. Through guided tastings, presentations of traditional dishes, and demonstrations of traditional cultivation and processing techniques, Frumentu guides the public on a journey that combines farming wisdom, flavor, and culture. Special attention is paid to varieties such as einkorn and other historic Sicilian grains, which are considered an agricultural heritage of strategic value for the future of the sector.
The festival program combines gastronomic moments with a series of meetings with agri-food operators and experts, offering opportunities to delve into the history of ancient grains, their nutritional properties, and their deep connection to the land. The festival is rounded out by artistic and cultural performances that animate the town center, transforming Militello Rosmarino into a meeting point for producers, enthusiasts, and visitors.
Frumentu is not just a showcase of taste: the festival focuses on the themes of health and food sustainability, explaining how native varieties represent a choice linked to biodiversity and supply chain quality. The event is organized by the Municipality of Militello Rosmarino with the support of the Metropolitan City of Messina, and is part of a broader effort to rediscover the agricultural and gastronomic roots of the Nebrodi area.
Set in the evocative context of the Nebrodi historic center, Frumentu offers the chance to discover an authentic village in the Province of Messina and experience the culture of Sicilian wheat up close. An event designed for those who love slow food tourism, made of genuine flavors, rolling hills, and traditions that stand the test of time.
The Municipality of Militello Rosmarino has not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 edition of Frumentu — Ancient Grains Festival. We invite you to consult the Municipality's official channels for definitive dates and program.
