On July 2nd, the Marian devotion of Calitri in the heart of Alta Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is one of the most heartfelt religious events in Calitri, a town in Alta Irpinia in the province of Avellino, Campania. Every year, the Calitri community gathers around the image of the Virgin of Grace for a day of prayer, fellowship, and popular celebration, following a custom that has been repeated for generations and marks the start of summer for the village overlooking the Ofanto Valley.
The celebration falls on July 2nd, a day traditionally linked to the Marian title of Our Lady of Grace and observed in numerous towns across Southern Italy. It is not a movable feast: in Calitri, July 2nd has always been the day of the Madonna delle Grazie, and this date remains the only certain reference even when the detailed program is released only in the days immediately preceding it, as is often the case with festivals organized by local committees.
The cult is linked to the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, which stands on the site of the ancient church of S. Maria alla Ripa (or ad Ripam), a building located near the Castrum Calitri and completely destroyed by the 1694 earthquake. It was the new feudal lord Francesco Mirelli who promoted its reconstruction, this time dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie. The building has had a troubled history, with subsequent reconstruction work in 1866 and after the November 23, 1980 earthquake, the tremor that hit Irpinia hard and left a deep mark on Calitri as well.
The organization is entrusted to the Madonna delle Grazie Committee of Calitri, a typical structure for southern religious festivals: a group of volunteers who collect donations, manage relations with the parish, and set up the secular side of the festivities. The event is included in the Estate Calitrana program, the summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Calitri which, from June to September, brings together religious festivals, live music, theater, impromptu painting, historical re-enactments, and activities for children, involving local associations, cultural groups, and volunteers.
The July 2nd festival is one of the first events in a particularly dense season. The Calitri calendar then continues with:
Those who arrive in Calitri on July 2nd will find an authentically local festival, far from the logic of large tourist events: families returning to town, the streets of the historic center coming to life, and the slow rhythm of a day marked by liturgical appointments. It is the ideal opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic villages of Alta Irpinia, with its perched Borgo Castello and the panorama over the Ofanto Valley, and to understand how Marian devotion is still a strong element of identity for the communities of the Campanian hinterland today.
As this is a festival managed by a local committee, the detailed program is not always published well in advance on official channels. Those who wish for updated information on the times of the celebrations and side events can contact the parish of Calitri, the Madonna delle Grazie Committee, or consult the channels of the Municipality of Calitri and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino.
At the time of writing, no official program has been released for the 2026 edition of the Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Calitri, in the province of Avellino. However, the celebration is a fixed-date event, traditionally held on July 2nd, and is organized every year by the Madonna delle Grazie Committee as part of the Estate Calitrana program promoted by the Municipality.
As is often the case for local committee festivals in Alta Irpinia, the detailed program โ Mass times, side events, potential musical performances โ is released only in the days immediately preceding the event, via posters displayed in town and the community's social media channels. We therefore recommend contacting the parish or the Committee directly to confirm dates and times.
By car โ Calitri can be reached from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway by taking the Lacedonia or Candela exit, then continuing on local roads towards the Ofanto Valley. The provincial capital, Avellino, is just over an hour away.
By train โ the reference station is Calitri-Pescopagano, on the historic Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line; service is limited, so it is advisable to check the current schedule before planning your trip.
By bus โ Calitri is connected to Avellino by extra-urban bus lines, with reduced service on holidays.
Religious celebrations and public moments of the festival take place in the church and in the town's public spaces: access is free and open to all.
The historic center of Calitri is hilly and has uneven paving: comfortable shoes are recommended. On festival days, parking near the center is limited; it is better to arrive early and leave your car in the parking areas in the valley.
Don't miss a visit to Borgo Castello, the ancient core of Calitri, and a detour along the Ofanto Valley towards the other towns of Alta Irpinia.
