Marian devotion, the Flight of the Angel, and rustic flavors in the Piazza Trento district
Between late June and early July, the district surrounding Piazza Trento in Scafati undergoes a transformation. The Santa Maria delle Grazie parish opens its doors for eight days of celebrations that combine liturgy, music, and traditional cuisine: this is the Madonna delle Grazie Feast, one of the most heartfelt and well-attended events in this town in the province of Salerno, Campania. There is no traditional festival committee; as parish priest Father Antonio Federico explained, the organization is handled by teams of community groups, associations, and volunteers who divide tasks from church preparations to managing the food stalls.
The Scafati church of Santa Maria delle Grazie features a clear Renaissance style, with a Latin cross layout, a single nave, and a low dome over the transept. Inside, it houses a polychrome wooden statue carved around 1700, depicting the Madonna offering an apple to the Child in her arms, while an angel with two bunches of grapes invites the faithful to adore them—an unusual and deeply beloved iconography. Popular tradition also calls her the "Madonna dei muroli" (Madonna of the Walls), as her intervention was credited with driving away the insects that devastated crops. This detail speaks volumes about this land: here, devotion has always been tied to farm work and the fruits of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese region.
The calendar begins with the lowering of the statue from its throne and its subsequent exposition to the faithful, followed by a preparatory triduum: confessions, recitation of the Holy Rosary, Eucharistic celebrations, and the Supplication to the Madonna delle Grazie. The central day is the liturgical feast, marked by several masses and a solemn celebration late in the evening. Participation is intergenerational: the parish youth group organizes activities for children, while families in the district decorate balconies and windows along the procession routes.
The two processions are the emotional heart of the festival. The first travels through the main streets of the district on the day of the recurrence; the second, the following day, visits various areas of the parish and features the most anticipated moment: the Flight of the Angel. A child, suspended and secured, "flies" to meet the statue of the Madonna to offer a greeting amidst petals and prayers. It is a tradition found in various towns in Southern Italy that, in Scafati, draws a dense crowd to the intersection where the scene takes place, in a silence that dissolves into applause immediately after.
Once the religious part concludes, the festival turns into a food fair. In Piazza Trento, the "Sapori e Tradizioni" (Flavors and Traditions) food stalls light up, with the Potato Festival taking center stage: potatoes prepared according to home recipes, fried specialties, side dishes, and rustic Campanian cuisine, served until late at night and accompanied by live music. In 2024, the event reached its twenty-first edition, a sign of an appointment firmly rooted in the Scafati summer calendar. Admission is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stalls.
Alongside the gastronomy, there is always room for music: in recent editions, the parish has hosted choral concerts of sacred and Marian music, while the final evening in the square is entrusted to local bands and groups. The message accompanying the festival, repeated every year by the community's priests, emphasizes hospitality, peace, and inclusion: here, popular devotion becomes a concrete opportunity for encounter between generations and families of the district.
In 2026, the Santa Maria delle Grazie parish in Scafati spread the festivities over eight days, from June 27 to July 4. The opening on Saturday, June 27, was marked by Holy Mass and the traditional lowering of the Virgin's statue, which was then exposed for the veneration of the faithful. On Sunday, June 28, with the festive masses, the preparatory triduum began, consisting of confessions, recitation of the Holy Rosary, Eucharistic celebrations, and the Supplication to the Madonna delle Grazie.
On Wednesday, July 1, the church hosted the "Maria in Musica" concert, featuring the Stabia, Oplontis, and Valpompeiana choirs. On Thursday, July 2, the central day, the solemn procession departed at 6:30 PM along the main streets of the district and was followed by the 10:00 PM Holy Mass. On Friday, July 3, the second procession visited the various areas of the parish, with a stop at the IACP square and the most anticipated moment of the entire week, the Flight of the Angel.
On Saturday, July 4, the festival moved permanently to Piazza Trento with "Sapori e Tradizioni - Sagra della Patata": food stalls opened from 8:00 PM with typical potato-based specialties and an evening musical show animated by the group OVER+. As recalled by the parish priest Father Antonio Federico, there is no committee behind the organization, but rather teams of community groups, associations, and volunteers.

The celebrations are held at the parish church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, while the civil and gastronomic events occupy Piazza Trento in Scafati (SA), Campania. The processions travel through the district streets: via Passanti, via Pio XII, via D. Catalano, via De Gasperi, the Moscati overpass, via della Resistenza, and via Tricino.
By car: A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, Scafati exit, then follow signs for the city center. By train: Scafati station on the Torre Annunziata-Salerno line; alternatively, take the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi and continue by bus. The nearest public transport stops are Scafati Trento and Passanti Ospedale.
Participation in masses, processions, and concerts is free. At the Potato Festival, you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls.
On procession evenings, parking near the church is difficult: it is better to leave your car in the surrounding streets. Early July evenings are hot and humid, so light clothing is recommended. Those entering the church during celebrations are asked to dress respectfully.
