The night-time procession to the mountain sanctuary of Crognaleto, in the Gran Sasso massif
The Madonna della Tibia Torchlight Procession is one of the most evocative night-time processions in the heart of Abruzzo. It takes place in the municipality of Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo, within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. In the height of summer, the faithful climb from the village to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Tibia, which stands at 1,187 metres along an ancient mountain path. The ascent takes place at night, lit only by the flickering light of torches: a serpent of light winding up the hairpin bends to reach the church, where the wooden statue of the Virgin, affectionately known as la paesana (the village woman), is displayed for veneration.
The church of Santa Maria della Tibia was built in 1617, and its facade still bears an inscription inviting travellers to kneel and venerate the Madonna. According to popular tradition, the sanctuary was an ex-voto offered by a wealthy merchant from Amatrice who, after falling into a ravine at that very spot, prayed to the Virgin and managed to return home with nothing more than a broken tibia (shinbone)โhence, according to legend, the name of the place. More recent studies, however, link the toponym to the ancient settlement of Tibbla, documented on the Crognaleto plain as early as the 12th century. Inside, the church houses a gilded wooden Baroque altar from the late 17th century and the venerated Marian image. In 2019, by decree of Bishop Lorenzo Leuzzi, the church was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary of the Diocese of Teramo-Atri, and is now included among the Marian holy sites of the Jubilee route.
The torchlight procession represents the highlight of the summer celebrations around the sanctuary. The community of Crognaleto and the surrounding hamlets, together with pilgrims and visitors, walk the path that leads from the village to the church, accompanied by hymns, prayers, and the silence of the Abruzzo mountains. It is an event deeply rooted in the identity of the Gran Sasso communities, preserved over the centuries by local associations and the Pro Loco.
The torchlight procession is part of the sanctuary's devotional calendar, which traditionally includes events in August and the Marian feast on 8 September. Around these religious events, the village of Crognaleto enlivens the summer with cultural initiatives, exhibitions on rural life, folk choirs, and musical evenings, set against a stunning landscape between the Laga mountains and the Gran Sasso, in the heart of Abruzzo.
For 2026, the Madonna della Tibia Torchlight Procession will be held on Saturday 8 August at 9:00 PM, under the title of "Torchlight Procession for Peace". This devotional moment, included in the 2026 Summer calendar of the Diocese of Teramo-Atri, will be presided over by Bishop Lorenzo Leuzzi and will take place at the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Tibia, above the village of Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo. The night-time ascent, illuminated by torches, will lead pilgrims to the 1617 Marian church, a holy site of the diocesan Jubilee route.
Crognaleto can be reached by car via the SS80 Gran Sasso road; the municipal seat is the hamlet of Nerito. The sanctuary is located in a panoramic position above the village, at an altitude of about 1,187 metres, and the ascent is made on foot along the torchlight procession path.
As this is a night-time procession in the mountains, we recommend wearing comfortable trekking shoes, bringing a spare torch, and carrying a warm layer, even in mid-summer. The event is open to everyone. For information, you can contact the Diocese of Teramo-Atri.
