The torchlight procession to the Eremo dell'Annunziata in Fano Adriano

The Festival of the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most deep-rooted religious celebrations in Fano Adriano, a small mountain village in the Province of Teramo, Abruzzo, located on the northern slopes of the Gran Sasso d'Italia massif within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Every year, in August, the community gathers around the figure of the Madonna in an event that weaves together faith, collective memory, and a deep bond with the territory.
The highlight of the festival is the torchlight pilgrimage. As darkness falls, the faithful meet on the churchyard of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the main monument of the historic center, which houses a fine wooden ceiling, a 16th-century Baroque altar, and an antique organ. From here, the procession, lit by torches, sets off along the path that climbs to San Marcello hill, where the Eremo dell'Annunziata stands. The procession concludes with Holy Mass celebrated in the ancient sanctuary, in an atmosphere of contemplation wrapped in the silence of the mountains.
The Eremo dell'Annunziata is a 16th-century sanctuary-hermitage, built in a strategic position overlooking the Vomano valley. Tradition links the site to the very origins of the village: the name Fano Adriano is said to derive from Fanum Adriani, a temple erected in Roman times on the hill where the hermitage is now located. Ancient legends of brigands and hidden treasure have been passed down for centuries, fueling the charm of this corner of Abruzzo. Always a destination for local pilgrimages and processions, the hermitage is now also a venue for summer cultural initiatives.
The Coronation Festival is part of the rich summer calendar of Fano Adriano, which also includes the historic feasts of Saint Roch and Saint Valentine, celebrations that renew the identity and sense of community of the village. The organization is managed by the Pro Loco of Fano Adriano together with the Municipality. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Teramo hinterland, amidst stone architecture, views of the Gran Sasso, and a spirituality that is still experienced intensely and collectively.
Fano Adriano can be reached by car from the A24 Rome-Teramo motorway (take the exit towards the Vomano Valley), then follow the signs for the village along the Park road. The nearest train station is Teramo, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The torchlight procession takes place in the evening and involves an uphill walk to the Eremo dell'Annunziata: comfortable mountain shoes and a flashlight are recommended. August evenings at altitude can be cool, so it is best to bring a jacket. Admission to the celebrations is free.
