The Patronal Feast of Faieto

The Patronal Feast in honor of Saint Andrew the Apostle is one of the most cherished summer events in Faieto, a hamlet of the Municipality of Cortino, in the mountainous heart of the Province of Teramo, Abruzzo. Perched at an altitude of approximately 630 meters among the Laga Mountains, this small village of a few dozen inhabitants comes alive every year to honor its patron saint in a celebration that weaves religious tradition with village conviviality.

The ancient church of Saint Andrew the Apostle

The heart of the celebrations is the church of Saint Andrew the Apostle, a massive and austere structure overlooking the Fiumicello stream valley. The current building dates back to around 1640, although a stone block relocated on the portal arch bears the date 1519, testifying to an even older religious presence. The church, with its gable roof and tall bell gable added later, preserves one of the bells dating back to 1550. Many of the furnishings come from an ancient Franciscan hospice that once stood above the village. Religious moments of the festival, including the solemn mass and the traditional procession dedicated to the apostle, take place around this place of worship.

Music, tradition, and community

Alongside religious rites, the Patronal Feast is enlivened by the Pro Loco of Pagliaroli, which organizes the event with passion, involving the entire community. The evenings feature live music, entertainment, and stalls serving local cuisine, where the gastronomic tradition of the Teramo hinterland takes center stage. Faieto is, in fact, the guardian of the scrippella all'olio, a humble peasant dish made with flour, water, and oil—once food for the fields and now an identity-defining excellence of the village. The festival thus becomes an occasion for residents, families originally from the area, and emigrants returning to Faieto during the summer to gather.
