About Santa Colomba

The Santa Colomba Festival is held in Pretara, a hamlet of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia in the province of Teramo, at the foot of the Gran Sasso massif. It is a celebration dedicated to Saint Colomba, a medieval hermit who was the daughter of the Counts of Pagliara and sister of Saint Berardo. According to tradition, she retreated to pray in a hermitage at an altitude of over 1,200 meters. The festival combines a devotional pilgrimage to the hermitage, the sounds of the ancient folk ensemble "Li Tamurre," and festivities in the town square, nestled between the Valle Siciliana and the peaks of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

The festival of the Gran Sasso hermit

The Santa Colomba Festival is one of the most evocative and identity-defining events in the Teramo mountains. It takes place in Pretara, a small hamlet in the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of Abruzzo and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The festival celebrates Saint Colomba, a medieval hermit figure deeply rooted in the popular devotion of the Valle Siciliana.

Saint Colomba, between history and legend

According to tradition, Saint Colomba was the daughter of the Counts of Pagliara and the sister of Saint Berardo, a Benedictine monk and the first bishop of Teramo. A young noblewoman, she is said to have abandoned the comforts of the castle to retreat into solitude, prayer, and penance in an isolated hermitage at the foot of the Gran Sasso, becoming one of the rarest examples of female eremitism in the Middle Ages. Her hermitage, accessible via a trail from Pretara, stands at an altitude of over 1,200 meters, in a rugged and solitary area from which, on clear days, the view stretches to the Teramo hills and the Adriatic Sea.

Numerous legends accompany the memory of the saint: the imprint of a hand left on a rock along the climb to the hermitage, the so-called "Saint Colomba's comb" (a series of parallel incisions on a flat stone), and the cherry tree that is said to have blossomed in the middle of winter.

The pilgrimage and folk tradition

The most heartfelt moment of the festival is the pilgrimage to the hermitage. The faithful climb the trail carrying flowers to adorn the saint's statue, accompanied by the sound of "Li Tamurre", an ancient folk ensemble consisting of drums, bass drums, cymbals, and a six-hole transverse flute, whose origins are deeply embedded in the centuries-old tradition of the Valle Siciliana. It is a sonic heritage that represents a strong element of cultural identity for the entire community.

Alongside the religious and devotional dimension, there are moments of celebration and gathering in the small Piazza Santa Colomba in Pretara, the heart of the hamlet's community life.

A festival brought back to life

After a long period of interruption, the festival has returned to being celebrated in a solemn manner, bringing a centuries-old tradition back to light and drawing devotees, hikers, and visitors to Pretara who are eager to discover one of the most authentic corners of the Teramo Gran Sasso.

An event in the heart of the Gran Sasso

Participating in the Santa Colomba Festival means immersing yourself in the mountain culture of Abruzzo, amidst spirituality, nature, and popular memory. The event is also the ideal opportunity to discover the territory of Isola del Gran Sasso, its hermitages, its trails, and the panoramas of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
