A celebration of faith and folk tradition in Palagiano, featuring a dawn procession and tagghiarin ascjquant

The Madonna della Stella Festival is the most deeply rooted tradition in Palagiano, a town in the province of Taranto, Puglia. Every year, on the second Sunday of October, thousands of faithful and visitors gather around the rural sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in a blend of religion, tradition, and conviviality that traces its roots back centuries.
Popular devotion is linked to the evocative legend of two shipwrecked sailors who, lost in a storm, were guided to the shore by the light of a star. After finding shelter with a mysterious woman who fed them, they realized at dawn that she was the Madonna, who had appeared to save them. Hence the title Stella del Mare (Star of the Sea) and the veneration of the Madonna as the protector of sailors, travelers, and the Lenne River.
The cult is ancient: the Relatio ad limina by Bishop Paolo Mastrilli, dated 1706, already mentions the Chapel of the Madonna della Stella among the churches of Palagiano, while the festivities have been documented since at least 1833. The current sanctuary, near the Lama di Lenne, was built in the 1980s on the site of the original rural devotion.
The festivities begin at dawn on Saturday, when the image of the Madonna is carried in procession to the sanctuary nestled in the countryside. Throughout the morning, holy masses are celebrated, including those dedicated to the sick, the youth, and couples. In the afternoon, the blessing of the tagghiarine takes place, followed by the return procession to the parish church. Sunday, the heart of the celebration, is dedicated to the solemn procession through the town streets, with the participation of the entire community, festive lights, and music.
Among the most characteristic traditions is the tagghiarin ascjquant, fettuccine tossed in a rich, spicy tomato sauce, prepared in large cauldrons starting Saturday morning. Their blessing and distribution is one of the most anticipated moments of the festival, perfectly blending religious significance with the pleasures of Puglian folk cuisine.
Alongside religious rites, there are plenty of secular events: a funfair, market stalls, artistic illuminations, and concerts in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where Puglian folk music enlivens the evenings. The Madonna della Stella Festival remains a cornerstone of local identity, drawing the entire community and numerous visitors from neighboring towns to Palagiano every autumn.
Palagiano is located in the province of Taranto, along the SS106 Jonica highway. By car, it is accessible via the SS106 (Palagiano-Chiatona exit) or the A14 motorway (Massafra exit). By train, the reference station is Palagiano-Mottola on the Taranto-Metaponto line.
The festival traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of October (Saturday and Sunday). Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
Religious celebrations, processions, and concerts in the square are free of charge.
