The most intimate candlelit procession in Ostuni, the White City

In the heart of the Apulian summer, when other patronal festivals light up with elaborate illuminations and brass bands, the Madonna della Grata Festival chooses a different path: one of quiet reflection. It is perhaps the most authentic and moving celebration in Ostuni, in the province of Brindisi, an event that every first Sunday of August draws thousands of faithful—around six thousand people—to the statue of the Virgin venerated in the sanctuary of the Rosara district.
The sanctuary stands among the historic orchards of Ostuni, in the countryside that slopes down toward the Adriatic coast. The origins of the cult date back to the 18th century, while the current neo-Romanesque church was built between 1896 and 1912 based on a design by architect Gaetano Jurleo. According to popular tradition, the name "Grata" (Grateful) stems from an ancient miracle involving the healing of a believer's spine, and since then, the Madonna has been invoked as a dispenser of graces.
The highlight is the evening procession, which begins at 7:00 PM from the sanctuary and winds slowly toward the historic center. The statue of the Madonna is followed by a long and evocative "serpent" of people, mostly women, who advance with lit candles along the city's main streets: via Giosuè Pinto, largo Lanza, corso Cavour, piazza Matteotti, corso Garibaldi, and finally piazza della Libertà , before returning to the starting point. Many participate barefoot as a sign of devotion, either for a grace received or to invoke a miracle.
What makes this festival unique is the absence of any spectacular display: no decorative lights, no fireworks, and no musical bands. The journey is marked only by the choral singing of the faithful, which transforms the procession into an experience of rare spiritual intensity. Eucharistic celebrations at the church in the Rosara district—traditionally at 6:30 AM and 10:30 AM—complete the day of faith.
The festival is part of the religious calendar of Ostuni, a jewel of northern Salento known throughout Puglia as the White City for the brilliance of its lime-washed houses. Participating in the Madonna della Grata means discovering a deeper, less touristy side of this village, where popular tradition and spirituality remain intact.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Grata Festival in Ostuni does not yet have an official published program. The festival usually follows the calendar of the first Sunday of August, with morning Eucharistic celebrations in the church of the Rosara district and the evening procession that travels from the sanctuary to the historic center of the White City. Information will be updated as soon as the sanctuary and the parish release the final dates and times.
