The Rain Miracle festival in the Monti Dauni mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Motta Montecorvino, a village of a few hundred inhabitants perched in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia, the festival on May 5th and 6th is much more than a religious appointment: it is the living memory of an event that shaped the community's history. Tradition tells that in 1901, after a long drought threatened to destroy the crops, the local farmers prayed to Saint John the Baptist. The long-awaited rain arrived on May 6th, saving the countryside. Since then, every year, the population climbs Monte Sambuco to thank the saint for the "rain miracle".
The centerpiece of the festival is the pilgrimage on foot, covering about six kilometers. On the morning of May 6th, it departs from the village church and reaches the small chapel built near the summit of Monte Sambuco, at an altitude of just under a thousand meters. The faithful make the ascent accompanied by characteristic allegorical floats pulled by tractors, which each year depict different biblical episodes with costumed participants: past editions have featured scenes such as Moses crossing the Red Sea or Jesus before Pontius Pilate. Once at the top, pilgrims attend the Eucharistic celebration in the chapel and, weather permitting, stop for a convivial moment before returning to the village.
The celebrations begin on May 5th with the feast dedicated to the Madonna dell'Arco: fireworks announce the official start of the festivities, followed by a solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna through the historic center, Holy Mass, and evening musical performances in the square. It is the first day of a festival that weaves together Marian devotion and the cult of the patron saint.
During the two days of the festival, the village houses are adorned with damask drapes and colorful fabrics on the balconies, bells ring out, and the community accompanies the processions with songs and prayers. Alongside the religious dimension, there is no shortage of entertainment: pop music concerts, tributes to popular artists, and the traditional fireworks that close the second evening. A tradition that has lasted uninterrupted for over 115 years and represents the deepest identity of Motta Montecorvino and the entire Monti Dauni area, in the rural heart of Puglia.
For 2026, Motta Montecorvino is once again preparing to renew the centuries-old tradition of the pilgrimage to Monte Sambuco in memory of the 1901 rain miracle. As of the writing of this entry, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published; historically, the festival is held on May 5th and 6th, with the day dedicated to the Madonna dell'Arco followed by the procession and the pilgrimage on foot towards the chapel of Saint John the Baptist. We recommend checking for updated information on the channels of the Municipality of Motta Montecorvino.
Motta Montecorvino is located in the hinterland of the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached from Foggia by heading towards Lucera and the northern Monti Dauni; the village is about 40 km from the provincial capital. The nearest train station is in Foggia, from where you can continue by car or bus.
The pilgrimage to Monte Sambuco takes place on foot for about 6 km uphill: comfortable shoes, water, and clothing suitable for a mountain trail are recommended. Departure from the village is on the morning of May 6th.
